Right, I've just got off the phone with the ever helpful Mercedes Hertford. They looked up various parts for me, one of which was a bonnet lining. They reckon I should have part number 2018891898 - £14.90. It's a small pad and only covers the rear of the bonnet above the heater matrix etc. Is that right, I always thought I should have the larger one like this.... http://www.german-spob.de/start.php?search_ersatzteil=A2016821326&start=0&artikel_id=303837&language=eng&seite=neu_art_details&p_name=ja |

As far as I know there is only one bonnet insulation pad certainly for face lift cars as I have never owned a per face lift! The pad covers almost the entire underside of the bonnet the only difference I am aware of is the the valvers have a reflective heat shield which when in place on the underside of the bonnet sits above the exhaust manifold. |

If it helps, mine is a 91 facelift model and it only has the smaller pad as described by the OP for £14.90 I read this in another post - "extra sound proofing was an optional extra...................standard sound proofing for a 1.8/2.0 was just a small piece.................. both diesels,2,6 petrol and 16v'ers had full sound proofing pad" so maybe if yours is not an 8v model it should have the full bonnet insulation. My 1993 1.8 Manual had the small bonnet pad as described by the OP. You could hardly hear the engine in the cabin so I'd say it's more than adequate. Tim |

MB may well have deleted old parts and are now just supplying one (or two) versions regardless of what was originally fitted Sun visor clips are a case in point - there used to be iluminated & non-illuminated sunvisor clips and now there are just illuminated ones Nick Froome www.w124.co.uk |

I have a 1.8 1992 and it only has the small pad(s). They are falling to bits so I had a closer look at the one noted on the German web link at the top of this string. If you take the part number and paste it into the Inchcape part finder site it comes up as being an E class liner - not 190. Slightly off at a tangent, I live in London and when it's raining steam comes off the top off the bonnet continuously. Traffic is pretty grim here but I can't think of another car I've had that does it like this. With only bare metal and no padding between the engine and bonnet I was wondering if that was the cause. Anyone else have this happen? Oh, and the car is running at correct temp with no over heating problems. |

Steam is normal. As far as I know, all 2.6 had the larger pad, most 4 cyl had the smaller pad but NOT ALL, it was an option. I have the lovely w124 pad on mine now, trimmed to fit. Its not exactly heavy but the bonnet slams far more solid and it looks great. About £60 I think, plus glue (tin of timebond) |

Hand to eye co-ordination a pair of good scissors or a trimming knife a nice flat area to work with and a good tape measure or your old pad to cut around the pattern providing you have the full size pad........... |

I cut mine to fit in place, in the dark, in the rain, the night before retro-car show. Not hard at all. My old pad was far too gone to be a template. I just held the new pad up to the inside of the bonnet on the underside, and trimmed 1/4 to fit. Glued it, and it held the weight after a couple of minutes so I went around the rest trimming and fitting as I went. Its probably easier to mark it in place with chalk or something and then cut inside, but it really wasnt hard. BY FAR the hardest bit was removing all the crumbly bits of the old one. Cover your engine (mainly the fusebox area and battery area) with plastic. I am still finding bits of crumbled foam even now !! Here is a pic of mine going head to head with marcus at the 2008 retro car show ![]()

A 124 680 00 25 But that is for the 124 and will need trimming a bit but it's a better quality than the 190 one. |

I used a tin of 'timebond' Picked it up from b&q, about £7 I think. One tin was just about enough. There is a special recommended glue which is about £12 I think but I was in a hurry so took advice on stuff that was easy to find in shops. Here it is :- http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?action=detail&fh_secondid=9254386&ts=1271609041706 I cant remember which tin size I bought, probably the smaller one but its only slightly cheaper. Mind you , mine was for the full w124 pad. Edited by kentronix, Sun Apr 18, 2010 5:48 pm.
