Sad days for my auto transmission

Well I'm sad today because news came from the foreign import shop that was looking over my 1992, 2.6. They said the (auto) transmission is half way in its grave, and I'd need to replace it, which would be around 3,000 USD.

It was my first car and I've really come to love the 190e along with Mercedes.

My current thoughts are to scavenge around local junk yards and see if I can find a Mercedes with an intact transmission. This brings me to my first question: Do I need to find the exact same type of car as mine in order for the transmission to be compatible? And if not, what all will work?

Furthermore, I haven't the slightest clue how to replace a transmission, although my brother has done it before and he'll be helping me, I would still like to learn as much as I can. So any How to's, or other information would be appreciated. I know I should probably invest in a Haynes manual but I couldn't find one at www.haynes.com for any 1992 Mercedes.

Other than that, hearing everyone's point of view on this matter would help me, cause there's probably something I've overlooked.
Thanks.

hi there, most auto boxes from a 1.8,2.0or2.6 should fit yours fine. The transmission is relatively easy to change, one advantage would be a car lift or a pit in a grarage to work under the car. I have a gearbox sitting here thats fine but im a bit too far away from you! good luck

Well heck where do you live? I'm anticipating a rough time trying to track down a decent transmission, and who knows what it will cost.

So its not broken yet?

Does it drive with problems and what is the transmission fluid like?

I think a second opinion may be needed.

If it is "halfway to the grave" it should be giving symptoms, tell us what they are and maybe someone could come up with ideas.
