Hello everyone....... I'm new here & this is my first post, so please be gentle ;o) My dad passed away just before Christmas & I've decided to keep his 1993 190E 1.8i & run it alongside my other car. The car is too good to let go & has only done 65,000 miles. I'm intending keeping it forever if possible, so you may see a lot of me on here from now on ! The only real problem I've got at the moment is a starting issue from cold. I know there are lots of posts on here concerning starting problems but I'm hopeing someone can point me towards something more quickly based on the symptoms. I've already done a few things but haven't cured it yet. So far I've replaced the HT Leads (it was a bit sluggish before & they have made a vast difference), new distributer cap & rotar arm, new temperature sensor & thermo fan switch, new air filter & thermostat (not all items related to starting I know). When trying to start it from cold, you have to turn the engine over three to four times. When it does eventualy start , it ticks over at between 500-700 revs & chugs a bit, after it's been running for about 30 secs you can then press the accelorator without it stalling, do it before and it will stall. Once it is running, it runs as sweet as a nut & it starts fine from warm. Does anyone have any ideas what best to look at next ? |

hello Linty, Welcome to the Forum ..A starting time of 3 to 4 seconds for the KJetronic is not unusual according to the WIS manual..maybe your cold start valve isn't working properly..?? It's supposed to put an extra charge of fuel into the intake for about 10 seconds I think so that might explain why its a bit sluggish at first..?? i'm no expert but it may be a good place to start..?? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() sorry to hear about your Dad passing away..!! cosser..!! |

Wow... thank you very much Cosser. Lots of very interesting information there ! It all seems to point in the right direction, I'll try and check it out as best I can on Sunday. I'm getting a new exhaust system fitted soon too, the existing one hasn't gone but it's still original & the baffles rattle when it's cold, also replacing the Lambda sensor as I don't think that's ever been changed either. |

Sounds like the OVP relay needs reseating/replacing. Behind the battery (behind cover) It's clipped to the left side of the ECU

Just a quick update...... I removed & checked the OVP relay on Sunday. The fuse was OK, so I lightly sanded the contacts & reseated it. Unfortunatley it made no difference, the car still struggled to start & still has slow tick over when cold. I'm not getting the other symptoms that normaly seem to be associated with the OVP relay, no warning lights for ABS etc, so still not sure if it's the cause of the problem. I've just bought a 2nd hand one off German Ebay anyway for 11.50 euros, so we will give that a try........ If that fails it looks like the cold start valve is the next one to check.

Hi Linty, Remarkably..I had the same problem yesterday..weird..which turned out to be my replacement OVP Relay...!! If you put a positive (+)voltage(12v) to pin 15 and negative(-) to pin 31 you should hear the relay switch click audibly ...I opened up my old relay and pushed a bit of plastic tubing in to permanently close the switch which worked as the car started and ran as normal. It's only a temporary fix as this would require you to take out the OVP when parking up for any length of time or it will drain your battery..!! Unless you have a battery cutoff as I have..?? Cosser..!! |

Thank you very much Cosser. The other one should be on it's way to me now. I'll wait till that one comes & see if it sorts everything, if it does I'll open up the old one & have a play & do what you did, sounds like the same problem ! I'm giving the 190 a couple of weeks off the road, so I'll have plenty of time to tinker. Now that I have sorted out a minor problem with my Hyundai Coupe....lol. |
