Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone has fitted a normal flywheel instead if the big heavy dual mass thing. I'd like my engine to be abit more revvy and I recon that's a good place to start but not sure of the complications to changing it...
Cheers

Don't know if its a dual mass but the flywheel weights 9.4kg and the ring gear 2.1kg

I'm only really here for the Kitchens

I thought dual mass was for the diesels ? I haven't really looked into the 4cylinder petrols but I assumed it was a diesel only thing, perhaps incorrectly.

Just checked the weight for a 2.5 diesel and it weights exactly the same

Hmmm do we recon it is a dual mass one then? I thaught they were diesel only aswel but when I looked on ecp it came up with one. Do you think there will be a nor
al flywheel that will fit?
Cheers for the replys!

very doubtful , its dual mass,
only 4 pot i have seen stripped so far is a 2.3 16 v and it's a standard flywheel.
dual mass flywheels are expensive and troublesome.
did one on a bravo 105jtd recently , absolute pig of a job.
only to find out afterwards i could have used 100jtd standard flywheel and clutch (half the price)
id avoid reman'ed dual mass flywheels,id reckon half the lifetime or less.
Dual mass flywheels dont like lively launches / high revving and slipping the clutch.
you'll wreck it .
i think they are one of motorings bad ideas.
and seemingly alot of manufacturers reverting back to standard flywheels.

The 1.8 engine comes with a Dual mass flywheel.
What I know is that Dave Irl did replaced the dual mass on his 1.8 with a 2.3 16v one in order to get more bite from the clutch. He fitted the 2.3 16v and replaced the spigot bearing too.

karlos , just found out input shaft lenghts vary between solid and dmf ,so you might be stuck with sticking with dmf.

How can I know if my car has got DMF or not? Is there somehow I can check it?

My car acts as if I'd have a HUUGE gap in my drivetrain and I'm tempted to believe it's something else... Could it be a shot DMF?

This whole DMF- idea seems quite strange, and at least I'd rather have a standard flywheel....
Then again, I'm no merc engineer after all...

Exactaly the same as me mate!

Ahh and it's guna be a nightmare to try and find the shaft lengths of my engine.
I have a lot of play in my drive train too. I think it's just my ruined diff tho. Probably about quarter of a turn of the props worth of play..

I might just take it off, if it's a dmf weld bits til it's solid, then grind bits off till it's balanced!
