:help:

Hi Guys,

I wonder whether any of you could shed any light on my concern.

I have a 2.6 Automatic.

The Engine is quiet Max Oil Pressure. Uses No Oil or Water.

When I got the car in February 2010. When starting from Cold Engine made no noises at all sweet as a nut.

Recently I decided to Change Oil and Filter. Went to GSF and got appropriate Filter and 10w 40 Semi Synthetic Oil made by Fuch.

Changed Oil which had not been done for about 2 years 15,000 miles so quite Black and horrible. Started Car all good same Oil Pressure.

Ever since then upon starting from Cold the Engine Rattles for afew Seconds until Oil Gets to Top Of Engine. Only when properly Cold. I came to conclusion that the Oil was Fresh and therefore was falling away and taking time to get to the top of then Engine.

As a precaution I decided to get a Merc Filter and change the Oil to Castrol Magnetec which states it will stay on components for better cold starting.

However it is still rattling the same as before.

Can anyone make any suggestions. Engine has covered 180,000 Miles but is in good order and has a superb Service History.

Also it didn't rattle with grubby oil init which I believe was Mobil but no Grade is shown in Service Book.

"before"

It sounds as though it might well be your hydraulic valve lifters. Not a huge job, indeed a number of members have done their own.I think there is a " how to " guide on doing them on here somewhere.

Bet the old oil was Mineral 15w 40 , a bit thicker.

These Engines were designed over 25 years ago and the old thick stuff is fine for them. (£10 from Lidl look for the MB number on the can ;) )

Yep sounds like the 'Hydros' (hydraulic valve lifters).

As long as it is only on start-up it's normal ;)

Overnight they can drain out and it takes a few seconds to fill on start-up.

Get worried and change them if they 'rattle' when the motor is warm.

As MadMike says it's an easy job to to (did mine last year). ;)

I think the question is though why have they started to make noise now that the oil has been changed?

audi20valve isn't the first person this has happened to.

btw you can always try Wynn's hydrolic lifter treatment. It worked for me B)

I have same problem on mine and its a 1.8. I used Wynns hydraulic lifter treatment but it didn't work as I was expecting it to work.
I keep regular oil changes and when things go too tappetty I add 400 to 500ml ATF and it becomes quiet again. (make sure you don't overfill).
That's a short term solution though.

I had a very persistant rattle and an exhaust note similar to a subaru, so got me a new lifter from GSF ( fiver) and 20 minutes later all was quiet in the world ! ;)

Had a similiar problem with my 190D 2.5, plus oil leaks. I'd bought semi-synthetic (on a recommendation from the supplier). Lousy advice, 'cos these old engines, seals and everything associated with the engine was designed to work efficiently on mineral oil. I did a filter change and back to mineral oil, all was back to normal within a very short space of time.

Don't believe all this marketing rubbish about these new sem and full synthetics, my advice is to use the stuff that the engine was designed for, irrespective of price.

Just my two penneth for what it's worth
