It is possible to Tow Start an M-B auto . Pre 1990 cars especially .

It is in the W123/W124/R107 handbooks and is called Tow Starting due to flat battery .

1. Place transmission in N , turn ignition on .

2. Tow car up to 30KPH - Cold Transmission ( or 50KPH Warm Transmission )

3. Then shift to 2 until engine fires ...

4. Then immediately shift into N .

I'm only really here for the Kitchens

There is a top speed that you shouldn't tow above too, I think its 30mph but not sure.

In the past I have towed an auto by just dropping the propshaft.

Only on the early cars with secondary pump fitted to gearbox, pre '86 IIRC.
After this the pump was deleted and towstart will not work.

for tow starting it's in the handbook.
B)

What Richy says is spot-on.

When I went to Richy's unit last year, we had to show the AA patrolman the handbook, as he was saying it couldn't be towed, because their standard practice with auto's is to lift the rear end.

Mine had thrown a track rod end, but as we were only (very fortunately) a couple of kilometers from Richy's unit and the AA wagon could only do a speed of about 20-30mph down the lanes, he did lift the front!

My Father always said that you can tow start an auto but speeds have to be generally higher than a manual transmission...I've never had to put it to the test, but I would rather have it towed I think.

:)

unless as andy says, the car is fitted with a secondary pump and/or the handbook suggests otherwise........................then it is a bad idea to tow auto's for any distance or above 30mph,as towing them drives the torque convertor in reverse and makes them pregnant :driver:
