I was looking for a bargin on ebay, as you do (if they exist) and stumbled on this little babe that needed rescueing. I went to view her and fell in love. Non runner, doors are not great but she looked solid elsewhere and so is the woodwork. The engine turned on the battery, so i am hoping theres nothing major to do and Stwat will be able to get her going again :ermm: . They dont always have to be fast, the charm and experience will do for me :D

How much was a bargain if you don't mind me asking? Is it on the original plates still?

Russell will probably be drooling over this :D

Best of luck with it, lovely feeling when you get an old engine going again isn't it :)

The reason I said was because I helped build one with a Fiat 20V turbo engine in and it was vastly overpowered. I then helped the same guy replace the fiat lump with a K and it was perfect. You could have all the rear end tailored but for convenience/economy/fun we just tweaked its power back.

I had one in the '80's, same colour but a saloon. It was an itch I had to scratch at the time. I ran it in tandem with my MGB but when I bought it there was no reverse gear!! Made parking a thought out process but changed the box easy enough and cheaply. Two things linger, the smell of it and how solid the metal panels were. I'd forgotten how bloody awful it handled and how slow it was, the MG was from another planet at the time in comparison. But they are quaint to look at!!

Bloody hell!! Twelve years ago :o

The moggy is a good un. Only two previous owners and dry stored for ten years. Very very solid chassis and body. Just the front doors and a very small amount of surface rust at the bottom of the rear arches. The wood is also very good and the interior is superb and will look fantastic after a good clean.

It hadnt been turned over for ten years but after all the initial fluid checks, it turned over perfectly with the booster attached. We didn't want to drag any bad fuel through so as soon as i knew the engine wasn't seized i stopped turning it over.

Talking of the engine. It seems to be an MG A series of some kind and has had an electric fuel pump fitted. Probably a 1275. But further investigation will have to be carried out on that.

I can't wait to muck in on the old moggy :)

That is a great car from way back in time; and much classier than the mini traveler.

I saw one last week on the A38 just outside Exeter in similar exterior condition with an elderly lady driving.

It made my day.

Good luck with the Resto

My neighbour had a Moggy. It was the convertible, and was in showroom condition. She only kept it for about a year. It was constantly being vandalised or it would have bits taken off it all the time.

I used to despise most British cars not for thier looks cause alot of them were very pretty but due to reliabilty issues etc etc and the Allegro!!

But the Moggy Woody mate lovely car I am loving some of the suggestions above regards a hot engine but otherwise it needs to be totally original want more pics once you have made some rpogress mate.

I managed to get a few hours work in today. I managed to get the fuel pump working and found that it needs a new coil and a set of leads.

We should have it up and running by Saturday hopefully :)

One thing that surprised me was the fact that they had electric fuel pumps fitted way back in the 60's!

Most 60's BMC cars had SU electric pumps. A tap with a hammer is sometimes needed after a lay up to get it purring again.
Good luck getting it running! are you going to change the oil before you fire it up?

Yes its getting an oil and filters change tomorrow :)

The SU pump needed the points cleaning and a quick wiggle with them got it working again.

Slowly but surly all the electrics seem to be coming back to life. At first nothing worked at all. But a quick clean up with circuit cleaner, a tap here and there and almost everything is coming back on line again :)

Im really falling for this old Moggy B)

MickBee, top tip, good old british engineering. 'if in doubt, get the hammer out' it worked!! :D

Vid of her running, we now need to solve the problem of the clutch release plate or something?? sticking to the flywheel :help:

Yes great day today :) We started out by checking the gap on the points and to see if we had a spark. That was when we noticed, there was indeed a spark, just not in the right place! The last owner had trapped the wire from the condenser between the dissy body and cap totally crushing and splitting it.

While the new points and condenser were being fitted i also found that the low tension lead was broken. So that was fixed(more than once  A new one is on the way ), new plugs and leads fitted and fingers were crossed once again.

It was a fantastic moment when she fired up for the first time in over 8 years :) After a few initial splutters she fired up for about 20 seconds but then promptly flooded and stalled as some fool pulled the choke right out lmao (alfie! :P )

After a cup of tea and a quick dry of the plugs she fired up and ran like a Swiss watch :D

All the years laid up seems to have caused the clutch plate to stick to the flywheel, which from what has been read on the moggy forums, is a common problem. If laying one up for any more than 6 months then the clutch pedal should be weighted down to disengage the clutch.

Hopefully we should be able to free it off.

Thanks Steve, :) Thats one of the methods i have come across B)

Leaving the engine ticking over for half an hour or so to use the heat transfer from the engine is recommended before trying any of the methods i have come across which included the tow as a last resort :)

I dropped an engine that hasn't run for a number of years into a traveller yesterday. Hope that fires up this morning as sweetly as yours did!
Fantastic, usually reliable, machines. Don't forget that the gearbox uses the same 20/50 mineral oil as the engine. With standard brakes you only have to give about 6 months notice that you want it to stop!

Another good day on the moggy indeed :)

We managed to free the clutch off after a lot of messing around trying different methods. The first thing to do was to run the engine for half an hour or so to get some heat transfer into the flywheel and clutch. The first attempt was to turn the engine over with the car in gear. That failed. The second attempt was to push the car up the drive(these cars are so light!! ) then roll it down with the clutch pedal down hoping the movement of the transmission would free the clutch off.

That also failed and by this time we had resigned ourselves to the fact it would need to be towed, which we couldn't do as James had leant his ropes and straps out

So, rather deflated we decided to call it a day and reposition the car so James could get his beetle, sorry, Porsche :P out of the garage. As i was rolling the car down i thought id just give it one last try. I depressed the clutch pedal and pushed(crunched :o ) it into first gear.

There was a rather loud BANG and the car suddenly started to roll freely. The clutch was free :J :H

She drives great and the clutch works perfectly B) So a great end to the day :)

All she needs now is is a few bulbs replacing and she is ready for an MOT.

Oh and peppiB, i see what you mean about the brakes :o I also love how the car doesnt even have any seatbelts fitted lmao

Just discovered this one! I seriously love that!

Good old BMC engineering, I love how you can bring one out of a slumber so easily. My Allegro was the same, I could have it standing for months, yet with a good battery and a shot of fresh petrol, it'd be away on the first turn of the key! Gotta love the A series... B)

Good old Minor brakes eh?, should be fun if that is a 1275 in there! Apparently a set of brand new front drums and cylinders makes all the difference though. And don't forget you can drain the oil out of the lever arm dampers and refill with motorbike fork oil to sharpen the handling.

I'll be watching this with interest now.
