Hi all.......

I'm about to change the fan belt on my 1993 190E 1.8i. According to the Haynes Manual, there should either be a scale with a pointer or a stamped on triangle & a line in order to set the tension. I can't see either of these, does anyone know how I set the tension ? Pictures below......

Big arrow shows the tensioner's adjuster nut. Undo the nut with a 13mm socket until belt is loose. Be gentle when tightening as it can snap
You will find the plastic arrow where the 'small arrow point on the picture.
If plastic arrow is missing then make a mark on the tensioner's body and another mark as reference mark on the the block so you ensure
you are not over-tightening the belt.

Also if no arrow is there then the belt is correctly tensioned when

you can only twist it about 90 degrees at the longest top length of the belt ;)

And don't forget to loosen the locking nut which will be a size 17 or 19 depending on your model,

before you start adjusting and tighten it when you are finished adjusting, locking the adjustment in position.

That locking nut is important, if you try adjusting without loosening it you will probably
break the adjuster casting and then it will be a bigger job changing the 'adjuster'.
Good luck.

Thank you, I'll take care with it. I'll have a go on Sunday when I've got plenty of time. Nice dash by the way, I could do with some more wood up top on mine. Maybe that's another job...lol.
