190D Fuel Leak from Pump

I've been running my free 190D 2.0 for a month now (1000 miles) on SVO.

Today I noticed something dripping from underneath the car, further investigation revealed the side of the engine is covered and it seems to be leaking from the 4 metal pipes on the top of the diesel pump.

I assume some sort of seal(s) have failed inside the pump. Is this something I can repair myself and if so what do i need?

You need to do the barrel seals and washers,about £15 worth of parts.
IMHO it is bette to get someoe who knows what they are doing to do these for you,as its easy to overtighten the barrels and screw your pump or break/lose parts of the pump.
Dirt falling into the pump during dissambly is also a big nono.

Hi,

UkMercTechie did mine :P and you need the proper tool, don't know how much, but as IP's are so expensive I would agree that it is far better to let someone who knows what he's doing do it :)

Do it yourself, and by the time you've bought the tool and the parts and maybe :o knacker your pump then I think I'd be erring on the cautious side.

Yes you can do it yourself BUT do please be carefull in your decision as to diy or professional

Right. so the advice is to get a MB specialist to do it. What sort of price should I be looking at?

I do have to consider that it is a free car so owes me nothing, so if I screw it up I've not really lost anything. It only has 2 months MOT left and will need work for another (metal brake pipes from the front to the back) plus a new clutch soon so I have to weigh up any cash I spend on the car.

there is s thread on this from when rich did his I think, doesnt look like a major job although lots of care would be advised. I havent actually done mine.

I would say double check that its not leaking from further down as well. Most older diesels have a small amount of fluid around these joints (from my experience), but I havent seen any that leak enough to actually cause drips on the ground. Obviously its possible but do double check for leaks around the lift pump, fuel thermostat, inline filter and the hoses that connect them all. These are very common points to start leaking, in particular the left hand side of the fuel thermostat.

All these bits re located on nearside of the engine, under the airbox very low down. There are pics in the 'fuel thermostat bypass' thread, which also explains a free workaround if it is this area at fault. Its vertically below the IP connections so quite possible.

It's leaking from the top of the pump where the pipes are for sure. There is alot of SVO swimming around these joints on the top of the pump.

I had made a mistake, it actually has MOT until December, its the tax that runs out in July so it probably is worth fixing. The bodywork is solid, if a little battered and at 130,000 miles it probably has a good bit of life left if this can be fixed.
