Fuel mixture adjustment

I've replaced the air-flow meter on the Merc so now to get the car working I need to adjust the fuel mixture. All I can seem to get it to do is fire up for about a second and then it cuts out. Does that mean it's running too lean or too rich? Been using trial and error thus far, don't really want to be faffing around cranking it for too long in case I run the battery flat. Obviously I'm not going to get it perfect myself, but at the very least I need it running well enough to get it to the garage around the corner to have the mixture done properly.
Any advice much appreciated!

The idle adjust screw is under the airbox and the mix is adjusted through the top of the airbox witha 3mm allen key.

Sorry should have been a bit clearer, that is what I've been doing, just wasn't quite sure if it's too rich or too lean at the moment

Check the plugs, all black then its too rich, also it will stink if its running rich.

Just spoke to Andy (UKmerctechie) and he's told me how to do it properly. Finger crossed...
