Hi everyone. I am new to the board here. Had some good advice in the introduction section recently and it seems my head gasket is on its way Flushed the coolant and cleaned the header tank and its pretty manky again.Oil and mayo in the header tank. No water in oil tho. I live near stansted airport and some garages have given me horrendous quotes starting from 8hours labour between 40 and 60 quid p/h and more then £200 in parts. From reading on here I know it shouldn't be that much although I understand its a major job to do. How much do you think it will cost and can you recommend anyone round the stansted airport area? That's about the going rate to be fair, unless you're good at DIY? You might find a 'backstreet' garage who'd do it for a slightly lower labour cost, but I guess there's slightly more risk associated in terms of how experienced they are and the quality of the repair. Eg, how long will they guarantee their work? 8 hours all in isn't a bad labour quote either - when you consider the amount of stuff to remove, strip, clean, flush etc and refit, test etc. £200 for parts is a little on the dear side but it depends on how much stuff they are replacing, where the parts are sourced and whether that includes machining costs etc? It's also quite possible that the head will be corroded where the gasket has been leaking, so you may need to budget for welding and a skim or a secondhand head if need be. If you're fairly good with the tools and have a knowledgable/helpful friend, I'm sure we could fill in the blanks on the forum here - not particularly complicated but it can be a little labour-intensive. |

hi there i done my head gasket the other week. quite a straight forward job. but id definatly recommend having the head skimmed and the valves relapped. you dont say whether that price for parts is including a new timing chain or not.? I didnt replace my chain due to lack of money but not replacing it makes the whole job a bit easier. if youve got a decent selection of tools and are quite confident then id say have a go yourself. but on the flip side that quote that you got isnt bad at all really! Your symptoms are exactly the same as mine were so it should be just as straightforward. good luck and if you need any advice then let me know! |
