Looking at getting back into the 190e seat and asked a seller if the cambelt has been changed.

Its a 2ltr Auto and I am sure this engine has a cambelt but he is telling me its chain driven and does not need to be changed?

Anyone shed any light please.

Thanks

thanks - does it need to be changed as a matter of course?

I guess it depends on the mileage and if it had the services done at regular intervals.

Not 'as a matter of course' as such, but probably when the engine starts displaying a distinct rattle on startup (lasts 4 or 5 seconds, and is quite harsh).
There is no set recommended interval, iirc but from personal experience I can tell you that my 1.8 Auto (Duplex Chain) exhibited said 'rattle' at 108,000 miles, and I got nervous and had the job done ASAP. £400-ish at London rates, iirc. Sounded brand new afterwards, just fantastic.

In fact, I'm gonna set up a 'When was your Timing Chain first replaced?' Poll.
Cheers!

If your car is fitted with the 'Duplex' according to MD it should outlive the car, as long as you do checks on the 'Tensioner' if and when it starts to rattle, that was the reason they went over to the Duplex and ditched the Symplex.

Usually a dramatic rattle at start-up is simply the tappets pumping up...if it goes away should be no probs...

Interestingly, my Tappets (or Hydraulic Lifters, if you like) needed doing a few k after the Timing Chain.
The Tappets, once noisy, stayed noisy.
In fact I was in two minds about taking the car on a 1,000 mile trip with noisy tappets but my local indy MB mechanic said it would be fine, if a little loud.
It was loud, really horribly f'ing loud (especially in 2nd gear accelerating up the hills of Exmoor) and I booked it in to have them all replaced the day after I returned from my trip.
Once again, peace was restored, and 20,000 miles later it still sounds great :)

That surprises me that someone has paid to get the 'Hydros' changed.

it's one of the easiest jobs on the car :D

Mind you, if you have the cash to 'throw' good on yer. lmao
