Hi...need some help regarding in what oil I should put in the merc. Temperatures have gone up here in Greece so after reading the stickies I still can't make head or tails! So now I've got 15-40 and need an oil change in about 2000 km but should I change it now that the temps have gone up...overnight 18-20 to daily 28 and above? Should I go 15-50 or 20-50 or stick with what I've got? I feel that I have a power loss when the car temp reaches 81 - 90. Gears (auto) change quicker when hot compared to cold, and pressing the gas pedal lower when hot does nothing....reaching the kickdown I end up spinning the wheels which is a pain... No loss or fluids from the gearbox...full service 8000 km's ago. Basically coolant---- no loss or air bubbles. Oil loss the normal 1 litre or less per 1000 km. Oil pressure is at 3 cold, warm 1.5 something when hot back to 3 when pressing the accelerator. Anyone |

Thanks mate for the info, 10-40 would be ideal for the UK, what about here in the south...some say 20-50 others say 15-50 and so on...it does get hot here in summer. My oil pressure dropped just below 1 now...very scary! Temp usually during winter rarely reached above and past the 81 mark...now in traffic it hit 85+ |

Personally if I were changing the oil during a summer in Greece I don't think I'd be looking at anything thinner than 15W/40 either, but I don't blame you looking at thicker alternatives although I can't offer any advise. Actually have you looked in your handbook? I'm sure there is a page in there suggesting which grade of oil you should use at different temps. |

I was over at eurocarparts the other day and chatting to the guy behind the desk and he recommended using 10-40 and when the car goes over 150k to start using 10-30. he had a little book to help him work this out :P. does this sound right to every one else? |

The older the engine the thicker the oil should be....I think. |

Me neither! But that's ECP for you. Full of totally incorrect information. 10/w40 semi synth is perfect for MB engines all weathers/conditions. |

I think I remember when I lived in south Germany where the temp gets quite high we all used 15/40 Mobile 1, in fact my car had that in from new only recently since I'm back in the UK I have changed to Magnetec 10/40 Semi Synth. As for using thicker oil when the engine is older is wrong, as it doesn't naturally follow that an older engine is in a worse condition as regards wear and tear, it depends on if you have looked after it

I posted a table of details a while back I think they came from the owners manual but basically between 10w40 and 20w50 is fine. If you have oil leaks or lots of smoke (or using up oil) then perhaps move up but if not I would stick with 10w40 or 15w40. |

When you state using oil...the norm for mercs or in general? Googled and found this ![]() so for summer reasons...I'm going to put 15/20 - 50 and in winter drop back to 15-40 |

Never heard of using thinner oil in a high mileage engine anywhere in my life before. What on earth would be the science behind that ? |
