Could be needing AC full time in the 190 pretty soon. Im wondering has anyone ever retro fitted an air con system to theirs and if yes....how it went, what you needed...what it cost.... Thanks Kieran |

Not much help this but the only way I'd consider retro fitting air con is if I had another car complete with air con already fitted (working too would be a big bonus) and remove all the required parts and swap them over. Even then with that done you might find the compressor or dryer etc need to be replaced and I'd also be fitting a new heater matrix regardless. Personally not a job I bother considering for our climate.

Not a job for this climate.........thats the idea Would an ac system from any 190 do the trick or would it have to be from a 2.3 16v? Providing its working obviously. Standard ones can be got for buttons over here. |

hey lad, To be honest I reckon there is far too much work involved in retro fitting air con to cars. Perhaps just maybe worth doing if you had all the equipment in good working order sourced at a very low price. You will need to mount the compressor, change the belt, fit the condenser. I cant imagine it would be easy to fit the evaporator inside either. I assume you would require the heater matrix off of an AC car as well to fit the evaporator. The gas pipes then have to be fitted. A new drier would be put on. The biggest problem you would then face would be LEAKS!! After going to all the trouble of fitting it you could find there is a leak in the system. Highly likely in my own opinion on a secondhand retrofit. A punctured evaporator or pipe leak etc. Wiring shouldnt be too difficult. But of course after all that you would be hoping the compressor is working!! Im not sure if a 190e ac system is the same as the valver but the components should be similiar with the mountings perhaps different as well as the vee belt arrangement, best ring mercedes. make sure its R134a gas too. You must be expecting a good summer haha. Hows the car going for ya. Seen a few pics of it lately here and there, looks stunning. |

I know that Matt has done this to a non-AC 2.6, and ISTR he didn't really want to do it again. ![]() So I suppose it's something of a nightmare. FWIW, for me, AC is also essential. I REALLY needed it on the 22nd May weekend and again a few days ago. To be honest, it seems that about 90% of old Merc drivers with non-working AC don't bother to fix it. |

i brought a scrap 190 for various parts and it had air con so i had the same idea of taking it off and fitting to my car but the problems soonstarted with pipes that were corroded and snapped trying to undo them and also there has to be a large hole cut into the bulkhead above the heater matrix and i would not recamend doing that without removing it .DONT BOTHER OPEN THE WINDOW ! |

My car has got the Diavia dealer fit A/C rather than the factory Behr kit. If the dealerships were able to do this I guess it is possible but your problem is going to be finding all the parts. I found out that a company in Woking can still maintain these kits although at a price !! Looks like they can still do retro fitting a/c so might be worth calling them to find out the damage ... DIAVIA Cheers Duncan |
