Hi Guys,

Another one has developed starting issues after the long unsolved saga of my CE. My good mates J reg 2.0 190E cut out on Saturday night whilst travelling at around 65MPH on the A12. At first on the side of the road with limited tools an initial diagnosis of the issue being spark related was made the dizzy cap and rotor were pretty manky to be fair and cleaned up to no avail. Anyway after transporting his car to a show and back Sunday we set about getting her running again and are still left head scratching.

I must admit these faults should be simple but I will be the first to admit unless it something obvious I do tend to struggle on resolving these. We have spark albeit fairly strong on cylinder 3 and 4 and intermittent spark on 1 and 2 my solution here is change the dizzy cap and rotor my concern is this it seemed to have good fuel pressure at the injectors the evening of the break down (Guessing it was just pent up pressure from the previous drive) now there is no pressure at the injectors however if we crank the engine and manually push the AFM plate down we get a jet of feul out of the injector pipe not convinced the pressure is high enough but I am unsure of the specific values.

Can anyone confirm that upon cranking the engine you should have some petrol pressure at the injector?

So far the tranny pack has been checked and confirmed ok on a running car however at this point I am starting to strongly oppose there being an actual ignition fault that would stop the engine running and rather it may be fuel??.......

Can anyone suggest any sensible tips to get her running again?

Regards

Si

A similar thing happened to me. I was driving along the M4 at 70 mph and my engine just died. Nothing would get it running again.

I towed the car to George Fraser and he looked at it. It turned out to be my fuel pump. A new fuel pump and the car was fine again.

Is your fuel pump running, can you hear it buzzing ?

Hi Mike,

Fuel pump buzzes when you turn ignition on I guess I really need to check its running when cranking.
Its a real pain cause the guy has just got the car out of the paint shop and it looks mint (amazing would be another word!)
I will continue investigating goinmg to look at it tonight so hopefully someone will come on here with that wonder suggestion that fixes all non running cars

Thanks anyway Mike.......

My word this must be the season for it .... last saturday I was on my way to Castle Combe and my 3.6 just cut out in the outside lane .

Anyhow to cut a long story short , there was a loose connection from the alternator to the fusebox . There are 3 (I think) thick wires going to the front of the fusebox , the RAC chap just tightened it . Mind you it took him 45 minutes to find the problem !!

OMG it must be Jezzer!!!!

I will check that as you have explained although I am starting to feel like its fuel related even though others involved are not convinced yet........

The funny thing is with this I notice alot of Mercs do not like being parked up and disused for any period of time especially if they are used to high and frequent mileage anyway!!

Thats precisely what this car experienced prior to is hissy fit

did ya look at the puel pump relay??? its a bloody scary thought when you hurtle at those speeds and then suddenly without no warning the car cuts out.

Si , nearly ALL 20 year old cars deteriorate very quickley when not being used .

I take my cars out at least twice a week .

+1

If you are getting a spark and it wont start..........sounds like a fuel problem.

Oh yes, when mine was towed in the first thing he checked was the fuel relay.

I take it you've checked the fuel filter, as that could have been partially blocked and become fully blocked whilst running. also have a look at the plugs just in case it's an ignition prob.

SOLVED!!!

I believe it was a cracked dizzy cap but we changed the leads plugs dizzy cap and rotor as they were all a little long in the tooth and it fired although whilst cranking I had to give the AFM plate a tap to get the feul to fire through but she runs.

Only thing after we got her running and took it for a drive it developed a running issue like fuel starvation at lower revs (TBH when I took the old plugs out it looks like the car is running lean anyway) I put some Redex in the tank and as we had no carb/injector spray through cleaner we parked it up for the night. She is driving like a dream this morning!!

Thanks for the tips guys......
