Actually , the 420 is breaking - I have it here for a week or two to remove what I want ( particularly the facelift Mushroom Leather interior I wanted for my 500 ) . Before anyone asks , the bumper chrome is rotten , and the engine is knackered - hence why it is breaking .

Hi , I'll speak to my friend who owns the car - I'm sure it will be available but please be aware the car is only running on six cylinders with apparent loss of compression on two and , reportedly , no fuel reaching the injectors for those cyls. either . However , I suppose if the air flow unit was knackered it wouldn't run at all ? Just to be clear , as I'm no mechanic , this is the unit that sits more or less between the throttle body and the fuel distributor ? I'm certainly having a few ancilliaries off the engine as spares for my two other cars . If you PM me a phone number , I'll get my pal James who owns the car to ring you re what he might want for it . |

Thanks , I'm only running the 500 at the moment and the 280 is a project car which will hopefully replace SWMBO's Hyundai coupe when it is ready . My 500 , although a Generation 2 car had pre-facelift leather fitted by a previous owner in place of the original velour , so I had been looking for a set of post facelift Mushroom seats for a while , the ones in this car are in pretty good condition apart from the usual wear to the drivers seat , but I have a good cover to match in the attic so will rebuild that one seat , checking the springs as I go since I also have a new seat base somewhere . The electric front seats from the 420 will fit straight into my 500 , while the fixed rear bench out of the 420 will need to have the covers swapped onto the frame of the electric rear bench in the 500 . The pre-facelift leather from the 500 will then go to replace the tatty cloth seats in the 280 ; at the same time , I'll carefully remove the switches and looms from the 420 so I can have electric front seats in the 280 . Other things coming from the 420 will include the towbar ( already have one on the 500 so it will go onto the 280 , ditto leather steering wheel and gearknob , facelift parcel shelf which allows fitment of better speakers and headlamp wash/wipe ) the cruise control on the 280 is not working , so I'll keep the amplifier ( already have a non working spare ) and throttle actuator which will certainly fit the 500 but may be different from the 280 one . CC works perfectly on the 500 after replacing the amplifier recently . All three cars already have things like OTG , illuminated visors and air-con . I'll be keeping things like lights , starter , alternator , water pump , duovalve , EZL and other modules , along with anything else that is handy for spares for my two 126's , easy to remove and store . I've agreed a price with my pal who owns the car to allow me to remove what I want , other parts will be available to anyone else who wants them , then what's left will be getting weighed in for scrap . The 5x 15 hole alloys have a decent set of Pirelli P6000's on them ; I did think of putting them on the 280 but have grown to like the 'mexican hat' wheels and , while adding a few 'upgrades' to it , want to keep authentic pre-facelift parts on it so it will look original ( I will hold on to the original parcel shelf so it could be switched back if need be ) . Lastly , if I can be bothered , I might remove the rear windscreen from the 420 and cut the rust free panel along the base of the window/parcel shelf out of the 420 and see if it is practicable to weld it in place of this rotten area on the 280 - I'm not so confident about this part of the job as my welding is still in a learning process and a bit 'hit or miss' as yet ! Just swapping the seats around won't take long at all . I can unbolt and remove the front seats from any of the cars in about 10 mins . Stripping and rebuilding my drivers seat will take a couple of hours tops . Same swapping covers on the rear seats : I've rebuilt/retrimmed seats on quite a few cars now . With seats and carpets removed , stripping out the looms shouldn't take too long either . Centre console comes out easily enough on 126's . As I'm on holiday just now and SWMBO is going to the inlaws for a few days , I'll have plenty time to do everything . Edited by Pontoneer, Tue Jun 22, 2010 2:58 pm.

Have to say ive always been a fan of the 500sel.As a teenager I had a 116 450sel and used to see the then new 126's driving around London making me very jelous.Back then a 126 cost the same as a 5 bedroom house in Oxfordshire.Until recently I had an amg 500 on fat pentas and loved every mile.Sadly it rotted beyond practical repair but I kept the good bits. Because of the very relaxed comfortable ride,I reckon if everyone in the country drove one of these, there wouldnt be any road rage!! When you see them on tele being used as diplomatic or royal cars, you can smugly say "Ive got one of those"!. |

I guess you must be slightly younger than me ( I'm 52 ) . Back when the 126 was launched , I was running around in a W114 280E 5 speed manual , and had not so long bought my Ponton which I still have to this day . I always liked the styling of the W116's but have only briefly had one - a 280SE which a friend owned from new , I got it years later with 200K on the clock and the poor thing was clapped out , used almost as much oil as petrol ! I've had numerous W115/114/123/124/201 and 126 cars as well as a W111 which looked ok but was a rust bucket and the only car I've lost money on in recent years ( but only a few hundred ) plus the W105 which I won't part with after 28 years . I got the 500 after we had a little boy late in life and needed something bigger than a 190 , didn't want another estate after 3 in a row and a people carrier is not something I would even consider , although I did think about a G Wagen - but found the 126 first from a fellow member of the MBOC . Subsequently , another two have found me , and a few local breakers seem to turn them up fairly regularly ! |

That would be great - I never got to see that car when Russell had it - maybe we can let him tag along in his 107 ? My pal who had this 420 now has a 300 SE , so we could get at least four to come . |

Slightly younger but only by 7 years!. At 17 I was a porsche nut with a 69 carrera but then I got given a brand new 280te 123 fully loaded as a company car. I very quickly saw the light. I went out and bought myself a 115 200 with 28k kmh on the clock.I wrote that off on the way back from a new years party. I then replaced it with a 114 280ce.I dont know what it was but it had a 5 speed auto the like ive never seen since. It was also lhd and I think came from Italy.I wrote that off in a narrow lane doing 25mph.Sounds impossible but the granada coming the other way was doing about the same and by the time we had seen each other round the corner it was to late. Then I bought the 450sel.A stunning dark blue with almost white leather. At 19 seeing all the new 126's made mine seem dated. It took me another 20 odd years before I kept my promise to myself and bought a body kitted sel. Had plenty of 123's and 124's in the mean time.I did have a new 190e as another company car on a D plate, and was very impressed. I unusually had a Daihatsu fourtrack that I put a 450 v8 into, that went well!!I used it to pull a 13 tonne horse box out of a snow drift on one occasion.Cost me a diff though. These days sadly 126's come here to be dismantled. We have to break to many low milage customers cars to use the engines for their conversions.Soon I may have to break a 560 from Italy with only 46k on the clock.Thats gunna hurt!. Thanks for passing details. |
