Hi guys, Im finally finished exams so i can think about doing something for the rattle on my car. Essentially ive had a few potential solutions rear their heads, done all of them, no fix. Its something under the car thats flapping about as i drive along making a metallic sounding rattle on bumpy roads and rattling with the revs as they rise. I've refurbed the propshaft, and while that got rid of some of the rattle, no dice had the centre box of the exhaust replaced under warranty (its had a powerflow from kingswinford) had the same centre box replaced again by another powerflow agent (which got rid of that boxes rattle) i put some exhaust paste on the heat shield that is beside the exhaust manifold as it had cracked near the part that curves under the manifold (its a 2.5-16) had all heat shields under the car tightened up, and while some of the rattle has disappeared. the rattle while driving along (no revs) just keeps getting louder and whatever is causing it is getting looser. my mechanic seemed to think that its resonance in the exhaust system which cant be cured as i'd have to change the whole stainless system....but this doesnt explain the constant rattling (which is getting much worse) as i drive along the last powerflow exhaust place i went to (crackley garage in kenilworth, nice blokes) seemed to think that while the exhaust had a little rasp still it wasnt the main rattle (and they're right, under throttle its less noticeable than it was) but its still rattling just as i drive along and he suggested maybe the exhaust manifold itself or something in that area as "it sounds like its between the centre box and the manifold somewhere" Do i knuckle under and go to a main dealer? i know they wont have much expertise on such an old car....(plus my student budget cant really handle it )but im guessing their customers are less likely to put up with a problem like this haha.Any ideas or help people could offer would be great, or even a recommendation of someone to take a look, I'm located in Leamington Spa, near Coventry |

Sounds like the heat shield. Best check that it isnt touching the exhaust and its fitted properly with all the fixings done up nice and tight. |

Worth checking your lambda sensor (or lack of). My last exhaust was driving me mad, I checked everything. Turns out it was a bolt that was screwed in to fill up the lambda sensor hole had worked loose. You wouldn't believe the racket it was making. |

I think its near the front box, or possibly down pipe. I think its on the pipe itself though rather than actually the box. Its just a threaded hole that the sensor screws into. If a lambda exhaust was fitted but the car doesn't need one they often just block it up with a bolt. |

Are you quite sure it's not clutch related, assuming it's a manual?? |

Dont think its clutch or gearbox, cos even in neutral just coasting along it rattles. plus all the rattle started with the exhaust being changed. Also, ive had a few probs with clutch etc on my old 190 in australia so ive been pretty vigilant in that area and made sure the mechanic gave it a good look.

Do you have an engine undertray on your car? The number of noises/rattles that I've heard over the years that seem to be coming from under the car, are often coming from inside the engine bay, and escaping from under the car - worn Polybelt Damper is a classic example - and because the cabin is so well insulated, it drives you nuts trying to find the source. Without the undertray, the problem is magnified. I would spend a good while, engine running & bonnet up (90-degree position) having a listen all around the car before admitting defeat

its been at the mechanic today cos i dont really wanna be under the car with just a jack and axle stand on my sloping street . now im holding off celebrating just yet, but he seems to think he's found the rattle. he thinks two things were rattling, the heat shield next the the manifold as the bit going under it was flapping around...and the drivers side anti rollbar bush was completely wrecked. oh, and the downpipe wasnt all that tightly held on...im going in 15 mins to get it and ill report back. cheers all for the ideas!this rattle has been driving me up the wall for a year and i think its finally gonna be solved!! ah well, as a result of it ive renewed half the things under my car, so that cant hurt ![]() Edited by vaggeli, Mon Jun 28, 2010 5:03 pm.
