Hi - my brother was driving my 190e cosworth yesterday and he said he suddenly heard a 'hissing' sound from the engine, then white smoke started coming out of the air vents and water was leaking into the front passenger footwell in the corner under the dashboard area. I topped up the water, but it seems to be leaking somewhere because the level didnt rise up. Engine turns, starts and car drives...but this problem happened again this morning, and obv the engine temp shot up over 80 within 5mins at which point i parked up. any ideas what this could be? water pump? fyi - i have had a new engine fitted last year ago, the block has been shaved down to allow for a thicker head gasket. I regularly take it out on motorways, water level and engine temp was fine over this hot weekend.. Thanks! |

Have you tried topping the car up with water, starting it and then looking for leaks? A water pump on it's way out would usually start with a whistling/whining noise. Have you checked to see that there is no water leaking from the hoses or from the radiator? I've only ever heard wet passenger footwell area being associated with a heater matrix. |

Indeedy. It may just be the pipe seal to the matrix or even the pipe split. woest case is that the matrix has blown. Thats a dash out job unfortunatly. |

thanks for the help everyone. Like i mentioned, I've had the head shaved down and a thicker gasket fitted - would this heater matrix/water issue endanger the head? thanks again |

+1 I would leave the car parked up and I wouldn't let it run or drive it! Your car is spilling it out all its coolant/water and has nothing to keep it cool whilst it is running! = BAD!!! |

You can buy some radiator hose and re-route the pipe to the heater matrix so you keep the system closed. On the exhaust side of the engine bay you can see the black pipe going towards the cabin. It connects to a hose that goes to the heater matrix. On the intake side of the engine bay you should find the return line from the heater matrix. If you close the loop by isolating the heater matrix and the control valves your car shouldn't loose any fluids. The work to fix the matrix though is still waiting there... |

Can anyone recommend where i can get a decent heater matrix from? The garage quoted me in the region of £400 for parts and labour which I think is a bit steep?! thanks |

It's a helluva job, pulling the dash. It's the labour that'll kill you. Try GSF for parts though. |
