Hi All,

Pretty much per the thread title my 2.6 manual has, what I'd consider to be a pretty slack gearshift. Can anything be done to tighten it up? Quick-shift kit maybe?

I'm uset to driving Mk2 Escorts with a quick-shift kits so I guess it might be fine, just worse than I'm used to..? Any checks I can make for wear before buying anything / taking anything to bits? What is the feel of these boxes actually 'supposed' to be like?

Cheers!

HC.

The shifter has rubber bushings and the are worn. that's why you have that sloppy shifting.

For our cars there is nothing off the shelf for quick shift etc.
People replace rubber bushings with stock ones or replace them with phosphor- bronze or ptfe bushings in order to make changes more precise.
Regarding quick shift only option is to modify your existing shifter by increasing the length of shifter arms by 20mm I think.

A brand new kit from the stealers is only about £35 .

well worth it .

Ooooh! Now that is good news!

How much are the phosphor-bronze or ptfe bushings compared to £35 for the standard? Worth the extra?

Finally (and thanks for your help gents) how much of a pita are they to fit? Can it be done in situ?

Thanks again!

use the search function of the forum for shifter bushings mate just to realise what you have to do.
It's a job that some people find difficult, some others find it normal.
you have to work under the car and you will need some clearance from the ground.

Check the For Sale section I think there was a bronze kit for sale.

The shifter kit is only that , it only tightens up the shifter .

Just used the search function (thanks for the tip) - they sound like a right PITA to change! Fortunately I'm a glutton for punishment *off to the for sale section* :D
