Overheating problem ( boiling over! )

(1992 190e 1.8 125000 miles)
Last week my engine boiled over after about an hour drive: steam, hades, mayhem -the lot.
AA guy diagnosed blown head gasket (he did an exhaust gas test on the expansion tank which proved positive) then towed it home.

The usual signs of a blown head gasket are not there: there is NO water in the oil (or the usual gack round the oil filler cap) and NO oil in the water evident, no white smoke from the exhaust, the engine runs smoothly and has full power.

I replaced the thermostat housing which was cracked and leaking, topped up the water with a full dosage of K-Seal, started it up - it ran smoothly, fan working ok but temp climbed to about 100, took it for a spin round the block, did about 3 miles, temp went into the red, parked it up the drive and whoooooosshhh, water, steam and nasty noises all over again!

Drained the water from system, removed and backwashed the radiator, removed thermostat, topped up water (fully) ran it again and guess what? no difference; temperature STILL going up way higher than it should, the fan kicks in at about 100 degrees but the temperature doesn't drop.

WHY is it overheating? I'm at the end of my tether and I desparately need this car for work.

Any help and advice would be very gratefully received.

***SIGH***

when my head gasket went it was exsacly the same.none of the usual signs
ran perfect. just kept boiling over. :(

have you done a compression test?..my guess is it is the head joint.

Nope, don't know how. What do you mean by head joint ? (All cylinders are firing normally, there is no loss of power - it just boils).

sorry head joint (head gasket)...the only other thing i can think of is an airlock.
but then if youve flushed the system.. :-/ ..

sound like the head gasket has gone to me. :(

Didn't the AA do a test for CO in the header tank and it came up positive? definite head gasket failure unfortunately.

I would suspect a blown head gasket between one of the cylinders and a waterway, maybe not enough to lose a noticeable amount of water but enough for the combustion gases under pressure to get into the coolant, I had the same symtoms a couple of years ago and that was the problem.

If the AA man did a test on the expansion tank and it was positive how much more proof do you want,
but even the best mechanic could be wrong.

Get a compression test done on all cylinders if you don't trust the other result ;)

Thanks for the answers guys, I was assuming the HG *was* failing but that I could carry on driving, having shoved K-Seal into the system. Does a blown HG always make the coolant system overheat obscenely even if the waterways are free of gunge?

The heads got to come off, no two ways about it unfortunately. The gas in the water creates hotspots and superheats the water or the level drops and it overheats that way, or creates an airlock so the pump cant circ water.

Ok, thanks - will try and do it myself and hope I don't have to have the head skimmed.
If I f**k it up I'll try and get some assistance or just scrap the bastard and try to find another Peugeot 205 !.

Its not difficult. Plenty of help available here :)

Scrapping it wont upset us, it just makes ours more valuable :D

Lastly, why would you inflict a pug 205 on yourself?

Thanks Richy - was just a frustrated destructive reaction and I used to have a pug 205.
I appreciate the support here. I reckon this will take me a week to do with my limited mechanical experience.
Where's the best place to order a new HG (+ the bolts I believe I need) ?
ECP don't seem to supply them.

I used to have a 205 myself, a CJ i think it was, white convertible with denim seats.....it was awesome! So I was only kidding there, parts wise ECP do them and there is usually some on ebay too. Plenty of advice kicking it about, done a fair few myself - special tools are minimal and cheaply found (big hex bit and an angle gauge, oh and a small slide hammer - mine is fashioned from a brake pad puller! )
