Apparently there are a lot of 16v-specific parts that are no longer available from Mercedes... ... are they becoming difficult to maintain? I would hate to have a lovely 16v go downhill because I couldn't get parts for it. What do you think? |

Recently i've been told by my local dealer that a few different parts are no longer available, Bonnet insulation for the 16v with the heat shield on it Oil filter housing gasket I've now been waiting a month for an air filter off them too. I got fed up so bought one from GSF on Monday and they were able to have it the following day I hope this isnt a sign of things to come |

I know mate they are a pack of twats to say the least. I gave them the part number for the bonnet pad and they were able to give me the price straight away indicating it must be available. Yet when i went to collect it he handed me the removable part of the bulk head from behind the engine. Needless to say i told him he could keep it. Now the pad is apparently not available. TOSSERS |

As there are still 600 odd left in the uk alone all the main bits are still available , and there are at least two or three being scrapped at any time , then most bits are source-able . Jeremy |

Dont even try to buy parts off the dealers south of the border. I buy all my parts off of Agnews Portadown. I am quite happy to pay the £15 courier for next day delivery. If you ordered an air filter from them in the morning for a 16v it should be at your door the following day. Plus the guys on the phone know what they are talking about, theres a couple of lads in parts dept at hogans in Limerick and honestly I dont know wether they are stupid, ignorant or just plain lazy... |

Yeah, I'm putting off buying a nice 16v near me because the more I ask around, the more it seems that finding parts for 16v's is getting harder and harder. Probably to the point of unreasonable-ness..... Sad. I'd really love a 16v, but if Mercedes is not going to support cars like this, which are a significant part of their legacy, then I'm a bit wary. |

I don't think there are too many issues apart from cosmetics, although there are a few bits which are becoming hard to find. All the service parts are available as well as repair sections and panels, but some of the major engine parts (block, for example) are comically expensive. Most other stuff you can get refurbished, as the quality of work available from general engineering shops is higher now that it has ever been - and I've been fooling about with old cars as long as I can remember. Also, don't forget that there are so many bits common to more than one model. I wouldn't let it put me off, frankly as the cars are so great that it's well worth the effort, although I have to admit that BMW support their old stuff with a bit more commitment. |

Yes definitely dont let it put you off. Sourcing parts new or second hand is part of the fun of driving an old car. Well it is for me anyways. The only thing i need is the bonnet pad with heat shield but in the mean time i've made a heat shield with reflective tape which is doing the job just fine so if necessary it can stay like that long term. All service parts or wear and tear parts are available spurious and some are probably better quality than OEM |

What about keeping them running properly? Some people report that the KJet is difficult to keep running correctly... is that true?? If so, what's difficult about it? |

The KE-Jet on the 16v cars can indeed be problematic. More so than the non 16v cars for some reason which is strange as they all use the same basic system. All il say is this. If your not prepared to put the time and effort in to keeping the car running well, then the 16v isn't the car for you. They are all 20+ years old now and need constant upkeep and dedication. You really need to love and have a passion for these cars to own one. You need to be ready to spend the dosh and be kicked in the balls at any time when things fail. Having said that, i run mine as a daily and it is as reliable as both my other 190's have been. OK i have definitely spent more on this car than any other car i have ever owned and it still needs a shit load of cash spending on it!!! But i simply love the car with a passion and would spend my last penny on it(and i regularly do )So you really do need to have a passion for these cars to own one. But i assure you, once you buy one that passion will soon overcome you and you will find yourself spending silly amounts of dosh on itB) |

I am car guy that's passionate about any cars that I own - whether it's a Toyota 4Runner or a Mercedes 16v legend. So that should not be a problem. What is it that causes problems with the KE-Jet? I mean, how often do you typically face a problem that prevents you from driving your 16v normally? It can't be more than once every 6 months, I would think, otherwise surely people wouldn't buy/keep the damn things. |

Typical issues for the KE system (and the cars themselves) is the fact that the system was applied to keep emissions low, which, if working properly, it does. Much of the time, bad running will be down to the OVP relay which, if the fuse pops, effectively puts the car into 'get home' mode. Further, a badly adjusted air intake plate, or clogged injectors, can be a pain. But the parts are cheap enough. The cold start valve and Idle control valve can offer problems as can the EHA valve (black box on the fuel distributor) which is a bit pricey. Aside from that, it's straightforward enough. But, it's true to say that if the budget cannot stretch (and times are hard) then the car can appear to be knackered for quite trivial but costly reasons. I'm sure that many cars are sold cheaply because the vendor has been head-cratching for some time about why the car won't start/run properly. Which is why joining this forum is such a good idea. |

Good info, RobertE - thanks! How often do you have starting / running problems with your 16v, really? Is this due to age of the parts on the car, or does the system fall out of tune? Edited by GoKart, Sun Jul 18, 2010 4:26 pm.

A fair point, James - I'm quite relieved at the prospect of getting at the Aston - I can rebuild SU's blindfolded at the kitchen table. But I've had no real problems; fuses pop, relays let go, etc., but by and large I'd recommend owning a valver - let's face it, they're E-type Jag quick with a bit more refinement... |
