The drive shaft dampener is an instance of German Voodoo engineering (a second is that strange goose step exercise "helper" spring on the clutch pedal: kicks your leg up just before the top).

Drive shaft dampeners go bad as the rubber rots. When they finally go the steel bit comes loose and creates a hell of noise that usually leads to a tow in........

The solution is complete removal of the dampener. This is the common fix.

Running without the thing to my knowledge has never had any negative effect. Mine has been off for over five years (we also removed the clutch spring for smoother clutch engagement feel).

Cheers,
bobf

Do you mean the flex discs between gearbox and prop, prop and diff or the damper mounted to the probshafts outside face? The first two are replacable rubber couplings, 3 bolts to one side, 3 to t'other for under £50 an end,i've not had to replace the outer one so unsure on prices.

I would say rear prop donut (flex disc) from your description.
