I can't believe you lived with the 8 holes for as long as you did! ;)

i love the look of them, love them BUT went to buy one last year, drove a handfull and was bitterly disapointed with they way they drove. doscovered why later when i found out how much they weigh. i still have a big soft spot for them and mabie an amg one would be different (would avoid a v12 tho)

really nice example there andy, what the year of manufacture? looks like a later one

Looking great Andy B)

Good work on the engine swap. New wheels, rear lights and the colour coding have brought it tastefully up to date ;)

Nick - 500SL is an early R129, the later models are known as 'SL500', plus you can tell by the early style interior etc (seats/door panels etc)

The last of the later 500s use the M113 V8 engine as well.

All R129s are nice cars IMHO, I nearly bought a final facelift SL500 ('98/99 MY) last year - obsidian black, pano roof, factory AMG split rims (SL60 type) and lots of other extras (extended nappa leather onto dashboard etc) - £88k new, but at 10 years old it had been run into the ground, and would have been expensive to make mint again.

Lovely stylish cruisers these R129s, nicely built and with the V8 engine they have a good turn of speed too B)

For what it's worth, I think the facelift pack ruined the look of that car.
Too soft, it doesn't fit.
Side vents look really cheesy, and the original aprons suit the harder lines of the car perfectly.
I bet the Aeros would look really odd with the later softer facelift panels.
Looks fantastic as it is Andy, stop faffing and get driving :P :D

^+1 I also don't like the more rounded softer later facelift models. The car looks fantastic as it is.

Spot on. The 129 SL has an aggressive angular 'solid' look to it - that's why the Aero1's work well with it.

A mean car sitting on a mean set of wheels.

The facelift panels would suggest an attempt by Mercedes to bring the later year 129's in line with the newer more rounded models it was producing at the time when designers were moving away from more solid angled cars.

I know they are genuine MB, but I think they look a bit too....... aftermarket?

Lovely car - the 129 is probably the best looking SL , after the 113 .

I came close to buying a 300-24 a few years back - I keep telling myself it wasn't practical and I was right keeping the 124 estate I had at the time lmao
