I have to buy an exhaust system.

This week I will call the dealer and get a new exhaust system.
I need the whole thing, the cat section, the resonator, the silencer.
It will cost alot, but I'm pretty sure they will get the right parts and they will fit properly.

Any reasonable alternatives I should see before writing the check?

Its one of those things where dealer parts are usually better in terms of fit imo.

I fitted a non-Merc exhaust to my 2 litre not long after I had it and I had to take it back twice to be adjusted to stop the banging and knocking!

I have mentioned it before on here but I fitted a Vortex system on my 2.0ltr,and never regretted it.Have a look on their website,www.vortex-performance-exhausts.co.uk.They promised better torque, more bhp and better fuel economy, and delivered on all three, although I haven`t had it on a rolling road. Before I changed exhaust I was getting 350 miles out of a tankfull. When I had the exhaust fitted we took the cat off as well, which would normally increase fuel consumption. However after fitting I am now getting 400-420 miles out of a tankfull.I haven`t got to work the engine anyway near as hard to get moving, hence the improvement in fuel consumption, despite cutting out the cat.If you look at the site it will explain how the Vortex works, but basically the Vortex unit, which looks like a silencer, sucks out the exhaust fumes and enables the engine to work more freely. The car runs really sweet and the exhaust was fitted perfectly,I have had no issues for complaint. If you go to any of the car shows, like the MPH/Classic Car show this autumn/winter,they usually give out vouchers with either 25 or 50% off.

most places which do Powerflow exhaust will do you a sustem for the same price as Kingswinford (club discount) plus what it would cost you in petrol to get there. I got one for £295 at the local Mr Tyres, Kingswinford would have been cheaper but cost me the difference to get there and back.

Hi Mates.

I read all your comments and had to make my decision. I didn't want to replace the system, but I have spent the last two years removing the system and brazing up little rust holes, until the pipes look like leopard spots. It's rediculous how far I have gone to avoid buying new pipes.

If I fit them myself I can afford to buy the whole authentic system. The parts alone are going to be 3000. Doing it myself, I am relying on the Merceds fit. I need this thing to snap together, because later if I have to work on the axle or tranny, it will need to disassemble like the original one did on a few occations.

The CAT is the biggest expense. I think the price is out-of-control. That piece of pipe costs more than a brand new Sears 23Hp garden tractor, and that is insane. But bloody rats if I would connect a new resonator to that artifact of a pipe that I have.

This needs to quick, easy, proven and predictable. I think factory stock is for me.

Thanks everyone for your input. I'l llet you know how it goes, and post photos.

Charles

:P

Local recommendations are not of much use I guess then :)

There is a german place that ebays exhausts quite cheaply although I doubt the quality will be anywhere near genuine mb. For the price you quote personally I would go with cheaper after market parts but then my thoughts are that if something doesnt fit quite right then your not hitting it hard enough lmao

Slight exaggeration but I dont mind returning to a job to fettle if it didn't quite fit first time. If you dont want the risk or hassle I guess it has to be genuine.

Done. Sounds like a new car. Very happy.

I told my parts people not to leave anything off the list. I told them I didn't want to bend anything, grind anything, or weld anything, or come back for parts; I don't even want to get dirty.

The entire old system was OUT in about 1 hour. Jack stands, Impact wrench, and 8 inch abrasive wheel. If it was stuck or rusted, I cut it.

The new pieces fitted up so well, I can't believe it. I started with the cat section, which has usually been the toughest, but it fitted right up. Then the resonator, then the muffler. I put anti-seize paste on the fittings and bolts, in case I have to work on the tranny or the drive shafts in the future. Wow, new parts are nice. Three hours from drive in to drive out.

do you make them? or do you know where one can be made for under 3 bills??

in all honesty do these cars need an aftermarket performance exhaust, does it really make a huge difference?
