Hi All, I've got thinking about replacing the diff in my 190e with one with a better ratio for drifting (quicker acceleration) that I can weld up (also for drifting). At the moment it has a way loooong ratio (at 70 on the spedo the satnav is showing 95 - I've had it up to 130+ (on private roads and it was well off the red line - not good for drifting) with the hydraulic ASD/LSD setup (also not good for drifting).I'd like a standard open diff, with a low low ratio, that I can fit up without any mods - what are my options? I understand that I'll need to get a diff with corresponding shafts and swap the whole lot in but I don't really wnat to have to change anything more than that! I'll be removing all the ASD setup at the same time (to shed a bit more weight up front) - would the complete (working perfectly) ASD setup be of any value to anyone? To upgrade a lesser model maybe? I've been offered a diff & shafts from a '86 190 2l manual (*note it's a 190, not a 190e - it's on a carb) - will this suit my needs? Will it even fit?! Thanks in advance for your help ![]() HC. |

Hi, I am a little confused of what your trying to achieve. Is this just a Plain Drift Car ? 190 diffs come in 3 different overall widths, and have 2 types of diff stub output shafts. Well there is a forth, and its the DTM version with Ratios from the whole Range being from 3.07- 5.10. These are quite hard to obtain and are not cheap. Non ABS Diff is the narrowest one of all and comes with smaller diff output stub flanges. Then you have the early 2.3 16v LSD which is a little wider and uses the larger diff stub output flanges. When the Diff was changed around 1988 to ASD type it was then the widest 190 diff. So when you select the diff ratio you require, check what diff it is, and which model and year it was fitted to, and that will dictate what half shafts you need, if swaping complete diff. ie ] Non ABS Non LSD Diff will not fit the ABS or LSD Half shafts. It is also worth knowing that a CW/p from a a Non ABS Diff, will not fit into a ABS diff as the spigot bearings are different sizes, and so they are not interchangeable. And just to add to the confusion, the CW/p from W124 ABS Diffs can be fitted to 190 ABS Diffs. With regard to the Diff Ratios, they are all here which I beleive is Pinned on this Forum somewhere if you use the ''Search'' facility, it works very well !!! http://www.baureihe201.de/W201/technik.htm Regards, The Gorilla. |

Mr Gorilla, thank you for your detailed response, much appreciated ![]() The plan is all out drift car, yes - Diff will be welded. Regarding the variety of diff widths / shaft lengths - I have been offered a complete 190 (2.0 manual) diff & shafts.. will this get around any problems with diff width / shaft length? Will it fit directly up to my hubs & prop shaft and mount in the same way? (I only ask as I'm unsure of any differences between a 190 and a 190e?) If I've understood the link correctly my diff should be a 3.92 ASD but the previous owner (Bri on here) fitted a 3.07 ASD from a 2.5-16v so it's legs are now waaaaay long (great for motorways / silly top speed, chuff for drifting!) The 190 should be either 3.23 or 3.46 (so still not much better considering mine was origianlly 3.92!) Bah! Now I want a 3.92 from a 190D

and it was well off the red line - not good for drifting) with the hydraulic ASD/LSD setup (also not good for drifting).
