After an epic night of travelling i have now picked up my new car. A '99 C43. The night started off well,Sportline Stu kindly drove me to pick it up. Saw the car ,couple of little issues but finally agreed on a good price. Set off wit the car, started raining......Turn the wipers on all good. Get to 80/90 wiper flys off the car straight into the path of a truck. Goodbye wiper I then pull onto hard shoulder,Stu drives straight past I continue along the hard shoulder, not being able to see a thing,it ends up leading me off the motorway onto a roundabout I stumble along blindly and try and find a petrol station, find a few,no blades. Fashion a new blade,Ray mears stylee, from a zip tie and a shammy leather........................Useless!!! By this time Stu has phoned me and we agree to meet at a pub he has stopped at,armed with the postcode off i set, hazards flashing and 2 miles an hour. Next the police pull me and promptly **insert swear word here** there sides at the situation, but its all ok because they are finishing shift soon "before" . Get to the postcode only to find a housing estate and no pub, finally find Stu and we fashion another blade, this time from twigs/sellotape and the shammy. Finally setoff into the downpour and end up driving at 80 because th erain then blows from the screen. Make it back and stop for juice in Stus car, jokingly i say"Watch this there will be merc wiper blades on special offer in this station" and sure enough there was So all in all not a bad night,12hrs from chester to coventry and untold strife. The car is nice though and going by the grin on Stus face when he drove it home, plenty of fun. Big thanks to Stu for tonight, told you life was never boring when we set off on one of my little missions

Looks nice Andy ![]() Good colour combo, black nappa leather is better than the two-tone, as you say they don't wear well, especially on the steering wheel. What's the bodywork like - any rust? Mileage/spec etc? Some of the really late ones had the tiptronic selector ![]() Quite rare cars the C43, only a few hundred imported into the country and I'm sure some of those are now RIP. Keeping it standard or have you any modding plans? What are your thoughts on the gearbox? Enjoy and welcome to the AMG V8 club ![]() Will Edited by Will, Thu Aug 26, 2010 11:33 am.

Thankfully the rustbug hasnt bit this one, couple of little paring dents and a bit of curbing to the NS wheels(nothing major). Interior is well and only low miles. The gearbox was my initial worry, but after putting some oil in it(Thankyou Merc for not fitting a dipstick) all seems well and updating the software to the 2000+ spec, crisp changes and no funny behaviour, guess time will tell on that score. Gonna change the stereo and mint it up and then see what i feel like about the car. Fuel consumption surprising good,62litre tank, quarter used and 151 miles done. Hopefully get inthe high 20's from it. Performance is blinding and i suspect i will need some new ESP bulbs, judging by the amount it flashes when you boot it Only 300 of these imported,so like you say a rare motor. OMG! What a mini adventure! Anyway, all worth is because the car is a real wolf in sheeps clothing. She has a squat and purposeful stance and some discreet bodykit, but nothing that really shouts 'look at me'. You really should have seen the look on the sellers face when Andy turned up with his laptop and specialist Mercedes computer diagnostic equipment and plugged it into the car before even asking for a drive. I think he thought we were going to kick a few tyres and use a 2p coin to check the panel fit was correct along the lines. When I say 'we', there was no way I was going to be communicating with the cars computers and assessing the pedigree and status of the AMG modifications! So, I kicked all 4 tyres and used a 2p coin to check the panel fit was correct along the lines. I gave Andy the triple S A (sportline_stu's seal of approval) which consisted of a double thumbs up and the deal was done. I have no idea how he wold have coped without me, really I don't. There is absolutely no way I would now consider buying a specialist car like this without being able to assess it like Andy can. It's really quite surprising how many dealer-only and one-off AMG parts are on a car like this. When I say one-off I mean specific to that car - like the autobox. I have never driven anything like it. Nothing has come close and I have driven quite a few cars regarded as 'fast'. I now know they weren't! If I had to use one word to describe the car it would be 'effortless'. On the way back I took full advantage of the AMG suspension and it was nice to be in a road car that could cope with the demands that such a qualified driver as myself could put on it. The gearbox was so quick and responsive and the power delivery completely through the range. For those of you that have driven a 2.6 in '2' with some welly, you will appreciate the usefulness of having that level of performance in '5'. I would love to put this car through its paces on a dry empty road in daylight while it was wearing quality new rubber. On Wednesday the roads were wet, dark and occupied. As Andy told the previous owner, you don't push a pukka AMG with only 2mm of tread on its boots. Sweet. Stu. |

could someone clarify as ive just looked at parkers for performace stats and the C36 is 6.8 secs 0-60 (280bhp) and the C43 is secs 6.6 0-60 (306bhp) with a top speed of 156mph fuel consumption is the mid 20's which sounds about right tho.............heavy cars tho 1.6 tonne's! cant be right surely??? |

Which bit can't be right Nick - the fuel consumption? These cars do mid-high twenties on a run, I can even just break into be 30+mpg bracket if I drive my '55 like a nun ![]() Will |

As with any car Nick, you'll get a fairly broad range of data that ranges from conservative to optimistic, with some completely inaccurate, dependent on the source. I'm fairly sure a C43 can be a little quicker to sixty than 6.6, but there's no doubt about it that they're a lot quicker accelerating than any 2.3/2.5-16 - over three hundred horsepower and plenty of torque sees to that. In-gear acceleration, overtaking or a 1/4 mile sprint would be a better measure of what these cars are about ![]() Quite a few cars are quick of the mark, but a C43 pulls and pulls like a train well into three figure speeds ![]() Always a '55 if you want that little bit extra

Actual recognised figures are C36 6.3 C43 5.8 to 60. Its the 50+ brkt that really impresses thoughdrop a cog and plant it at 50 and it lights the traction up and goes like a rocket. 80+ is where the car lives,it has bags of torque and is effortless at motorway speeds,80-1?? in a heartbeat. Economy is actually very good, just done a tank to empty and refill and worked it out to 25 mixed driving. Thought the SL was good for a V8
