Hi,
the diff on my 1.8 has been whining since i bought the car,but recently i have noticed a kind of clunking noise when i change gear. The rear diff` axle feels loose as well.Could this be the rear bushes or donuts? If so,is this an expensive job?

Thanks in advance,
Sax.

Mine looks loose too but it's because of excessive backlash in the diff.
I am going to change them when I do the diff just for peace of mind.

That sounds like Saxs' problem too with the 'clunking' when changing gear ;) .

Mines done it for about 3 years, never got any worse...DOes seem mainly 1.8's have the problem, substandard diffs?

My old sierra was tighter than a tight thing in this dept....

Yep if you have to put it in a garage (workshop)

But maybe Richy can give you a better idea.

Back in the fifties we used to put fine sawdust in the 'diff' ;)

That stopped the whine and toned down the klunk lmao

Ive also a 1.8, and i find my diff only whines between 40-50 miles an hour which is quite strange i think. Anyone any enlightment to why this might happen?

Diff Whine can be reduced in some cases by re-tightening to spec the pinion Nut. The torque on this nut adjusts the play in the bearing. This does not fix the problem though. it only makes things a bit more comfortable untl wear in the bearing increases again.

As for the problem in general for the 190 diffs I believe that the problem starts from some minor misalignment of the differential and the driveshaft. As the U joint on the shaft is supported next to the bearing in the middle of the prop shaft, there is some serious loading on the pinion bearing in the diff as it has to support all sorts of loads introduced by the crown wheel plus the overhanging weight of the rear prop shaft.
