Hi everyone. I was informed by my repair shop, that the vibration absorber in the front of the propeller shaft (a metal ring with rubber spokes) needs replacement. I found this on ebay.de

http://cgi.ebay.de/Schwingungstilger-Kardanwelle-Kit-Mercedes-124-W201-/400156158084?pt=Autoteile_Zubeh%C3%B6r&hash=item5d2b2a6884

Is this what I am looking for? Its for an 1.800 car.

Thanks in advanced

That is stupidly expensive!! They will be cheaper from the dealers than that. Try the dealers, then GSF and ECP for better prices.

This is not one of the rubber joints (the ones that joint the shaft with the diff) what I am looking for. These are cheap
What I am looking for is a much bigger metal ring that has some rubber spokes, and it stands 'outside' and around the shaft just after the tranny. It is called (at least in greek) vibrations absorber and it affects the ride quality in high revs.
The cheapest I located localy was for 140euros (not dealership)

I suppose you are looking at the correct part and there are not that many on e-bay.

The dirive shaft vibration dampener is a bit of Merc engineering that has yet to be shown to do anything beneficial at all.

Perhaps it is there to solve a problem that does not exist. It is a most curious solution to an undetectable in real life voodoo engineering problem.

They do however all eventually fail with a horrendous noise when the steel ring comes loose and begins to flail around as the drive shaft turns......not nice and guarantees a tow home.

Here is what to do: if it has started to fail just remove the entire thing and do not waste time or money on a replacement: just leave it off.

Many 201 owners have done just that and have not noticed any difference in smoothness or any increase in vibration. Ours was removed over five years ago with no effect at all except the peace of mind knowing that it will not fail.

Cheers,
bobf

Gurus,
Interestingly..according to the wis manual..they done away with the vibration absorber altogether in I think Late 87 or early to mid 88 when they installed a dual mass flywheel..??

does this give anyone any clues as to why they may have felt the need to install them originally..??

Besides the driveshaft vibe damper, we can add the following Merc engineering oddities to the "why?" catagory:

-- The strange over-center spring on clutch pedal that gives the pedal a kick at the top of engagement. Removing it gives much smoother clutch engagement with no ill effects.
-- The sometimes one/sometimes times two/other times none "pie plates" on diff output flanges.

Anyone have others to add?

Cheers,
bobf

I'm interested !
