Well I'm must start by saying that I never thought I would be here (not literally here of course), but here as a Merc 190e owner. It started as a joke (Im an unadulterated petrol head BTW) to an old chap in my local pun, whom (did) have a rather lovely white 190e (J plate). Long story short, its a full history 98K white manual, which (I believe) has AMG suspension (lower than standard), and has 15inch Carat wheels (I never knew it was only a 1.8 to look at). With a personalised number plate - with an asking price well under four figures it now resides with me. I've always loved RWD, well it kinda ticks all the dream boxes, and I really do just love it for its condition. So thats it, after a well needed T-Cut and wax theres really not much to quibble body work wise (its never had a prang) two issues Ive found are under the NR internally door rubber, where all the cables run on the shell side (1cm sq ish), and around the rear (NS again) window rubber 2cm Sq. I will try and get those sorted along with some stone chips (anywhere cheap for window rubbers?). Pending the governments Public Sector cuts, Id love to keep it along with my JOB, and just get it immaculate again (it could be perfect), I strangely adore it, although Im just not sure it deserves being run around Brighton as a daily driver. So thats it, Ive owned shed loads of good and bad cars over 18 years, and cant believe that a white with blue velour, windey window object has grabbed me so. There is a slight knock if not driven utterly smoothly between 1st to 2nd which I would be grateful to find out what it is. Also a slight whine (very quite though) at around 2k rpm, which I guess is the diff (although not serious), the knock Im hoping is innocuous, however, any help would be wonderful When I win the lottery this weekend, Id like to find out if anybody has ever attempted a swap with Honda S2000 engine running gear etc. (IS THIS POSSIBLE), the Merc is lighter that the S2000 ! has four doors, and would make a lovely drifting sleeper with 230bhp, also economical to boot (just a thought - hope nobody is offended?) Look forward to hearing from you |

Hello and welcome You will find this site a great place to be with very helpful members who have a wealth of knowledge that they are more than willing to share I for one would be very interested to see a 190 fitted with an S2000 engine! It would be a massive undertaking needing the replacement of many many parts but anything is possible as they say. Stu |

Thank you Stu I know its a vague question BUT any idea what the slight knock from the diff area could be (mainly noticeable if 1st to 2nd is rushed?) I haven't been able to get underneath yet, I know nothing whatsoever about 190's yet (Haynes Manual on its way!). I was wondering if there maybe a rubber around the diff/driveshafts etc thats perished. It doesn't sound mechanical or serious, but loose? if that makes sense. Many thanks in advance |

Why have a 2.0 16v Honda engine when you could have a 2.5 16v Mercedes engine? With the cost of getting a Honda engine in, you could easily get 240bhp (and lots more torque) from a 2.5-16. |

Nope, it Nathan. One of the Scandinavian lads is running around 240, with cams, pistons and EFI. Is he not? |

Hi, I was actually being silly to be honest (as stated after I win the lottery at the weekend), although I have seen a couple Toyota 2JZs in 190s which made me think.....Teach me to join a forum after being taken out by a supplier at lunch-time where NOT much food was consumed. Prior to finding out my loins worked, I owned several Honda V-Tecs and F20C2 is a masterpiece, light, well its still, I believe, the most powerful normally aspirated 2.0l engine? But you do have to drive it like a motorbike, which doesnt suit allot of people I know.... It would cost a ruddy fortune to do, but everything is the right way round, hence my slightly drunkard logic. but thanks for your responses To be honest I never thought I would own a Mercedes and therefore not thought about them much, but I really am absolutely smitten with my 190, I had honestly just planned to sell on, but Im afraid thats out of the window, much to the Mrss dismay, I hasten to add; Im going to do everything possible to keep it now. How an 18 year old car can suffer time so well, with no squeaks or rattles anywhere, with only a couple of small rust points is a real testament to its quality, Ive quickly learnt to admire the (old?) Mercedes ethos; I adore the way it makes you feel and I love the 80s design and cant stop myself from looking out of the window at her. The 1.8 is pretty under powered admittedly, but beggars and choosers and all that. In dream land again, how hard is the 2.3 or 2.5 16v swap, I think, unlike allot of you, I have never experienced the 16v. Everybody in web land seems to adore it? Please excuse my naivety but is it the same block etc? could my 1.8 have AMG suspension from the factory, or just lower springs or something? shes firm but comfortable and looks lower than standard. also is it possible to get a faster rack? Im guessing from the Cosy. And if YES does an adjustable steering column become a possibility? Also is there any possibility of hidden rot under the plastic sill skirts to watch out for? I promise I'll get up to speed pretty quick and not continue to ask stupid questions - but any answers are much appreciated I will post some pictures when I can find the camera. cheers |

Ok , most folks who join with a 1.8/2.0 quickly realise that the cars can take much more power , but the answer really is just to get one of the more powerful models . OR take the easy way out and gut your car , it only takes an hour the first time you do it , then you can put everything back as and when you need it . Takes 10 minutes the second time . Jeremy |
