why am i having so many problems with the joint between the manifold and the downpipes on my 2.0??? i feel like im constantly undoing resealing and doing them back up! its getting to be a right pain in the ass! ive replaced the engine mounts because i thought it was moving too much and doing it that way but that hasnt helped. Im on holiday atm and have had to get a mate to ask his garage friend if i can use his tools and that to sort it out coz it sounded like a tractor last night! thinking of replacing the whole exhaust with a custom stainless one but afraid that it wont cure th problem! any help would be great! cheers!!!!!!!!!!! |

First thing would be engine mounts but obviously you have done them. Did you do the rear one at the back of the gearbox ? You may find the exhaust is clamped up wrongly down the line so the whole system is getting pulled rearwards. Have a look at the rubber hanger thingies and see if they hang roughly vertical, rather than pulling or pushing the exhaust forward or rearwards. |

it should seal up without paste or anything. I get the whole system hung and ensure there isnt any influence from the joints and that everything twists feeely and slides (Duck oil) and then start tightening up from the manifold back. I dont usually have problems with exhausts but have heard of plenty who do. Are you doing up the manifold bolts evenly a bit at a time? |

I went to hell and back trying to stop the manifold to front pipe blowing. Took off and re tightened at least 3 times until i gave up and took it to an exhaust centre. Only then did i find out that it wasn't blowing at all!!!! The rasping i was hearing(and still am)was because the baffles had disintegrated in the front box causing it to resonate and rasp!! I was told to either live with it or replace it. Mercedes want silly money and none of the aftermarket suppliers can seem to get the correct pipe i need. So until i get the old box cut out and a new box welded in i'm just living with it. |

You wont get an exhaust fitter fitting metal to metal without a touch of paste alot of people think that the u bolts on the rest of the system are for sealing but they are for holding the exhaust in place

Thay are not called exhaust fitters, there called butchers .Any car with a Kat is sealed metal to metal before the Kat,i.e manifold to downpipes and also all merc manifolds to front pipes are metal to metal seal.Edited by Ukmerctechie, Sun Nov 14, 2010 1:16 am.

My 2.6 was just the same, if you are doing it on your back it will be hard to get it right, Get it on a ramp and you will sort it! |
