Picked up my Benz (2.5d manual) this afternoon and the only thing I have noticed (didn't hear it on the test-drive) is a metallic noise coming from the rear when I reach 15mph> It sounds as though the pads or shoes are rubbing (not sure what it has at the back yet) but apart from that the drive is lovely, smooth, no vibrations. I'm thinking it could be bearings or brakes but until I get the rear wheels off I don't know. Des |

Has the car been standing a while? It could just be some corrosion on the disks, after a few miles it should wear off. |

It has only done 2000 miles since April and not really moved much in the last month, so could be. I'm going to take it for a little drive this evening, see what happens but as a precaution I'll be taking all the wheels off checking all the brakes, lines, ball joints etc... Des |

All 190's have discs on the rear with internal shoes for the handbrake. Is it a constant noise or a ticking noise? A wheel bearing would be a droning kind of noise. Also is it only at 15mph then stops or does it carry on from 15mph onwards? If it were sticking handbrake shoes I'm sure it would do it all the time and not just at 15mph. |

The noise carries on from 15mph onwards. It does not increase in volume the more speed you put on and you really can only hear it if you have any of the windows open. To be honest I don't think it is a bearing noise myself but I' not going to discount anything yet! Des |

Okay small update. After putting 150 or so miles on the clock since ownership the noise has died down but the noise is only noticed when turning left into a bend so all the weight is transferred to the right handside of the car. I also noticed one of my engine mounts has collapsed so a couple Merc ones are on order so I'll wait till I've changed these first before I look into this particular issue. Des |

Sounds silly I know , but have you checked the boot , it may be a loose spare wheel tightener thingy ... or something else loose in the boot .. tools rattling ? Jeremy |

Have I bought a lemon? Had the car 4 weeks now, changed the engine mounts, also had a problem with fueling, a new fuel filter and inline filter sorted that out, oh and have had to recharge the battery a couple of times as a result of the fueling/starting issue. Funnily enough the grating noise dissapeared, till yesterday. Now the noise is back and its constant, definatly coming from the rear of the car, so will have to take everything off for sure to give it a good inspection, I hope it's not the differential thats gone Des |

Probably play in the wheel bearing or wrong wheel bolts fouling on the handbrake mechanism. |

^^ Wheel bolts was my first thought too. Best thing to do is to jack the car up at the rear, release the handbrake and by hand spin each of the rear wheels to see if the noise is still coming. I had something similar earlier this year and it turned out to be the tiniest of springs of the rear brake mechanism that had come loose and was rubbing against one part of the brake disc. Hopefully it turns out to be something simple Also, is it definitely coming from the rear? Definitely only happens when the car is moving? Does the sound of the noise change as the speed increases? (i.e. does it go higher in pitch as you increase in speed / decrease?)
