Hi,not a newbie as such as I registered quite a while ago,I am thinking about buying a 190 as a daily driver for the Mrs,must admit at being a bit concerned about the ball joint issue though, are uprated joints available? I know everyone says the auto's are best but Mrs doesn't like auto's so will be looking for a manual, what should I look for (apart from balljoints!!) when buying,I run a clasic as an everyday car so have a classic policy running, how old does a 190 have to be to be able to add to my policy? I'm looking at a 2.0 manual with an intention of maybe lpg'ing it in the future, has anyone done an lpg conversion?
Thanks in advance for any feedback....heres a pic of my classic.... :D

the ball joint issue isnt as big as it sounds, although a area for concern,i wouldnt let it put you off from buying a 190. the problem is most people miss the signs of a failing balljoint, and they are easily missed unless you know, that was the idea to put a warning up on the site, to make everyone aware of the warning signs, like a squeaking when you turn, the steering wheel not returning to centre. my advice would be , if you buy a 190 and dont know when the last time the balljoints were changed, have them changed and you'll be fine for at least 4-5 years, i changed 6 years ago,and i have only changed them this time because i renewed all the suspension bushes, mounting rubbers and stabiliser arms, discs and such,so seemed a pity not to renew the ball joint too otherwise it would have been the only thing i hadnt changed  ;)

as for running it on LPG , frank33 did his own lpg conversion successfully, so he would be the one to get advice from ;)

Thanks for the reply ,how easy/hard are they to work on? what are the difficult jobs? I work on my own cars so hope to keep costs down that way,I'm still concerned about the balljoint issue,is failure usually caused by cheap parts or the age/condition of the parts? has anyone had a balljoint fail that was newly or recently fitted? :driver:

i can change the balljoints will relative ease, although some dont agree with my methods, big can of worms  lol i suggest you read the ball joints threads in the suspension section and make your own mind up ;) . failure in normally caused by age/condition of the balljoints. although they can fail by the bolt/ball bit seperating from the casing, the most common way i have found is the top bit(bolt section) actually snaps, roughly where the retaining bolt groove is ;) as for new one or recently fitted ones failing , i personally never came across it :)

Well theres some good news and some bad news,I bought the Merc 190,its a 1984 "b" reg in silver, paint is a bit flat, slight ding in drivers wing and a couple of splits in the dash top, wasn't worried about that because I intended to fit a cossy bodykit and black leather interior, its done a genuine 107k with loads of bills/history but the downside is that My circumstances have changed and I need to sell it!!!! It drives lovely too! anyway here are some pics...

Bit of an update,I have taxed it for 6 Months (£112) and insured it on My classic policy (£35  ) and started using it,I love the way it drives, sort of wafts along but it does go a bit if You want it too,I changed the wiper (£3.54 ebay!!) and found when fitting the new one that there is a seperate small wiper at the bottom to clear the middle bit of screen (anyone know where I can get one of these?) I took it to put petrol in and realised I didn't know where the 'pull' for the petrol cap cover was, took me a while to realise you just push the 'other' side of the cover to open it,I love the economy gauge too
I have given it a good clean and tapped out the dent in the wing, its looking really good now and I am trying all ways to keep it. I will do the blown door panel thingwith the B+ Q plastic strip as in the thread on this forumand maybe repaint the hubcaps, its sort of an ongoing project and I must admit its growing on Me daily.... Love the Imp...great fun.

My mate at College, guy called Don, had one in that very colour too, and we were always pitching my Mini against his Imp, and the results were evenly balanced....ah, happy days!

:) :) :)

really early Singer Chamois,I have owned over 20 Imps and smile every time I drive one
I'm in South Wales about 20 miles up the Valley from Cardiff.
Mike its always nice to hear Imp related stories,My imp has avo shocks and monte carlo tarmac springs all around it handles like a gocart! :driver:
Thanks for the replys guys
I always wanted a Merc Cosworth but the prices have rocketed out of My range over the past few Years so this was going to be a cossy look a like but to be honest its too original and nice to mess with.

Hi, just another little update,I put £25 worth of petrol in the Merc a few days ago and didn't expect to do many miles with it if I'm honest but I am quite pleased with its mpg,I suppose I was expecting low 20's at most bit so far I have travelled over 60 miles and the gauge hasn't moved!
I love the way the car just sort of wafts along,I can see why people advise against the manual box as the car is so lazy that an auto is almost essential although having said that whenthe loud peddle is fully depressed the old girl picks up her skirt and heads for the Horizon in a way I did not expect
Bends/Corners.now thats where the fun ends, its a big old lumbering beast thats best at home on the Autobahns other than Welsh B roads, slow and steady is the way to go although I am used to the Imps gocart like handling,on the plus side speed bumps don't bother the old girl one jot! superb ride quality
I also love the way that everything is to hand on the indicater stalk :D
Oh and nearly forgot, the economy gauge, always thought these a bit of a gimmick but have found that I am driving to the gauge, perhaps thats why its good on fuel eh?
Any comments?

Hi and welcome, sorry you can't keep hold of the car for longer.

It's a bit of a rarity that one, with having the small wiper, single washer jet and what looks like the early 14'' wheels. No side repeaters either! Definitely one to preserve. If I had the cash spare, I'd be tempted, an early pre facelift car is appealing to me right now.

Love the Imp as well.
