Hello All!

I just joined the forum - I'm on the mercedes-benz owners' forum, but I didn't know there was a dedicated 190 forum too! That's great!

So, hello everybody!

The reason I found this forum though is rather a sad one though - I was doing some research about 190s as I had an accident with mine (really gutted), and was trying to find out as much info as I can. I slipped on the snow we had a few weeks back and ended up hitting the central shoulder in reverse - not good!

The car has a big dent at the back and the insurance wants to write it off, something I definitely want to avoid, as the car was mint before (1 owner, my wife's grandfather, always garaged, low mileage, etc.) and has sentimental value. The people at the garage the insurance sent me to weren't very nice though, said repairing it would cost more than £4k (I rather disbelieve that one) and replacing the car would cost £500 (again, I rather disbelieve that!).

Anyway, I would be grateful if anyone would have any suggestions and/or advice!

Aside from that, love the 190s, love driving them - and hope I can have my car fixed!

Welcome, fella.
Very sorry to hear about your accident, and I can identify with your desire to keep a family-owned 190 on the road.

We can hopefully help you, but it would be a huge advantage if you could post up pictures of the car in its current damaged state.
Here is a guide to Posting Pictures on this forum in case you're unfamiliar with how to do it.

Many crashed 190s have been bought back from insurers and repaired, so don't get too down about it just yet :)

Hello all,

Thank you so much for your very kind replies!

Here are the pics of the accident - I must say I cringe every time I look at them! so I post them here now and will go into hiding straight away, out of sheer shame :'(

As I said, not looking good - though I hope something can be done! (For what it's worth, I know a very good garage in north manchester - I live in south manchester - who does really good work, though they're not mercedes specialists; they're actually honest and don't overcharge, something I wish I could say more often about garages! ^o) )

So... there it is: ( :runs away in shame: )

That does not look too bad. I had similar damage not long ago ( a stone wall jumped up and ran into my car  )

I payed £300, ( erm, cash money ) to have it done.Just about the only difference was that my bootlid was ok. But of course you can get one of those without much trouble and not very expensive either.

Whereare you ? I got mine done in London SW17. I can give you details if you are anywhere near.

Mike.

Edit.

Just seen that you are in Manchester. I`m sure that some of the guys who live up that way will come on later and be able to tell of some reasonable places to take it to.

first off dont worry that looks repairable to me if your anyway handy with the spanner head to the local scrappy and get a bumper, side pannel, boot lid and light all rather easy to remove and wont be anywhere near what the insurance company suggests but if you go for all new from merc then maybe

then take the parts to a good body shop to get the panels pushed out both side and rear and respray the other parts if your not lucky enough to get the right colour in the breakers and jobs a goodun

Good stuff, as per other comments on here that is definitely repairable by the right people.
If you can get the car out in the open and post a pic from side-on that will also help, also try to ascertain whether the main floor area of the boot has rippled.

Not bad at all that. Rear quarter will be the neatest job with a used bootlid. Rear panel looks like it'll manipulate ok and a rear lamp.

this is soooooooooo repairable, i repaired mine and it was worse than that, cost me about £400. i let the insurance write it off and bought it back for £25, cost me about £400 to repair it, that was cutting a rear quarter panel out of a car in a scrapyard, bumper, boot lid and light cluster and a full respray, if you chose to repair it after its been written off, you will need to re-MOT it and have a VIC check (vehicle identy check costs around £30)

The 190 with the very slight front end damage was also written off, it's a shame I wasn't on this site then as I would have gladly given it to some one .....for free. The bloke I did give it to scrapped it in the end :crying:

welcome aboard mate, as other members have said and some repaired the same sort of damage, its all repairable, especially if the car holds sentimental value, which lets be honest no money can ever replace.

please though stand firm with the insurance company, make sure you can buy it back @ an agreed value ,and please please dont send them the f**king log v5 log book, once they've got that ,they command the playing field then. sorry hate insurance companies they do a valuable service but are sharks to.

Hi guys,

Thanks soooooo much for the replies, it's really heart-warming that you guys think it's reparable! :)

Will definitely look to see how to have it done - starting with trip to my scrappy!

Mabz and Mark - thanks so much for the offer! To be honest I'd be happy and really grateful to take you up on the offers and buy the parts from you - it's just that being new to the repairing game I don't know which parts I need (well aside from a rear panel and a boot lid, obviously!)

Will talk to my garage as well - as mentioned they're good and usually do good work. Mark, if I can ask, where's that bodyshop in radcliffe?

Here are the pictures from the side - hppe they're not too fuzzy, it started raining as hell just as I got the car out! Regarding the boot floor, I don't know cos I can't open the boot! (The amusing thing in the story is that the fish I had bought that day is still in the boot - must be lovely by now :'( )

Anyway, thanks guys for the help and good advice, that's really great!!

You are likely going to need a replacement bootlid anyway, so you should do whatever it takes to get the Fish out!
That smell will be there for a very long time if you don't!
If the lock opens, try prying the bootlid open with something like a chisel wrapped in a cloth.

Firstly, welcome to the forum!!

Tough break with the damage, but it could've been so much worse!! :)
With a garage & winter on the way, it's the perfect chance to teach yourself bodywork skills!! ;) ;) :)
As you have seen already, there are so many on here that will assist with advice & spares.

If you can buy it back from insurers, what have you got to lose? ;)

Put the damaged rear lamp through, that will give you access to the boot at arms length, if its out of reach you may be able to 'fish' it out with something.

And dont be tempted to fit half a rear quarter, it looks awful and takes much longer - hiding the joints neatly inside the door shut and rear vent aperture is the way to go.

although i did only replace 3/4 of the rear quarter panel( i couldnt find any full panels for sale when mine was written off ) you can get it right but i'll agree with richy it does take much longer,if i was to do it again , i would use a full panel ;)

Sorry to hear about your accident it looks to be a really lovely 190e

I get soo angry every time i hear storys like this it makes my blood boil ^o) "before"
It should be made Illegal for insurance companys to simply write off cars because its conveniant for them

Just because a car isnt a year or two old that shouldnt be an automatic reason to write it off, they say itll cost £4k like hell it will i used to have a 2 year old Micra some yob poured acid over the hatch and at a geuss it required no more than a couple of hundred spent on it the insurers sent it to an accident repair centre a huge chain they charged the insurance £1800 and replaced parts that never even needed doing like rear parking sensors, rear light, badges, numberplate all of which had no acid anywhere near them and all still worked perfectly

its time everybody got together and flooded the insurance association that governs insurers and demand this stops!
Dont get me wrong a dangerous car should never be put back on the road again but deciding a perfectly good car has to be tagged with write off just because they wont pay out is plain wrong!

Maybe if they got small independants to do the repair work like they used to in the old days the bills would be smaller and cars wouldnt unecessarily get written off ;)

Hope your 190 soon gets sorted clunkyduster2

Be nice to see it looking how it should do ;)

+1

it was the assesors that tried to make my 190 a CAT B instead of a CAT C, because of its age, age of the car has nothing to do with it,it only HAS to do with the damage it has substained, mind i've got to compliment my insurance company at the time for fighting with me to get changed back to a CAT C, so if you think their findings are wrong , which they are sometimes , dont be afraid to challenge them ;)

You have three ways of approaching this:

1 - let the insurance company write the car off, walk away
2 - let the insurance company write the car off, buy the car back & repair it
3 - negotiate a repair with the insurance company

If you take option #3, get a realistic repair quote using secondhand parts. Looks to me like the boot floor will be rippled but the rear door shut is OK. Lucky. Ask the insurance company what their threshold is for writing off the car - if it's 60% of the value and they value it at £500, let them write it off and buy it back. If they're realistic, and you use s/h parts, you may well be able to get them to agree to repair

Don't let them forget it's your car. They can't do anything you don't agree with. If they don't have possession of the car they can't scrap it. Once you give it up to them you run the risk of them scrapping it without your permission

I always recommend a classic insurance policy for 190Es and W124s

Thanks for the all the advice and help! :)

I will go to my garage tomorrow and see what they say - that is, if the snow has cleared, I don't want to have another accident...

Thanks too for the pointers about panels - good to see parts don't cost the earth! Will also try and get the boot open - time to reclaim that fish, it must have 'matured' nicely by now :'( :o

Thanks guys for all the help!

This sportline I have was written off, because the passenger door was damaged in a car park,
The repair bill was £800,the lady who owned the car at the time was so annoyed about getting it written of she complained to the insurers.
I have all the paper work ,and the letters she wrote,
The garage who did the repair ripped her off, then advised her to put a claim in.
I wouldn't even bother claiming if I had a bump,
My insurance is solely for third party claims ,I myself am fully com.
insurance companies ,garages who work for them and solicitors ,are all out to rip you off,
Tell your insurance you don't want to claim then fix it yourself if possible
