Despite deciding that the 2.6 replacement was going to be a small estate, preferably with a diesel engine known for its economy, I have somehow ended up buying a huge estate with a 3 litre engine!

The deal has been done and all the paperwork sorted but I wont be able to collect it until after Christmas. It needed work to get the SLS working properly which has now been done but the cold weather froze something in the fuel system which now needs a replacement part. Unfortunately Andy is away from work for a bit so it will have to wait.

The owner lives in Scotland and I don't! So, part of the sale was done with some old fashioned trust involving the paperwork and spare key being sent through the post for inspection, a cheque in the post and a V5 in the post so it's great to know that there are still decent honest people out there!

I didn't have any real plans for whatever car I bought - it was always intended to be a family workhorse that would be used, maintained, stuck through the carwash and not 'loved'.

However, this is a much better car than I expected to buy and after discovering today that the seller has located a folder full of receipts from the service history and the car has also been 'chipped' :D I think I might be very tempted to get the paintwork sorted and get the bodywork in as good a condition as the rest of the car clearly is

The wife wants me to resist spending any money, but I keep checking ebay for a nice set of mono's which I think would suit the car well, and can you imagine the size of the bass-box I could build into that boot!!!

Stu

Yeah it's still there thanks to the freezing weather and then our pesky mate wanting to jet off somewhere hot instead of getting underneath it to fix it :(

Funky green or matt black - leave it as a surprise for me!

Yes they are....... don't tell anyone but it's part of a discreet invasion plan to take over this site and replace it with one for silver estates, thereby forcing all 190 owners to comply......

WE ARE THE W210 OWNERS. LOWER YOUR SHIELDS AND PREPARE TO SURRENDER. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE.

Do it. They really transform those cars.
Just don't bother polishing the lips if they need a refurb, it's a waste of time. Painted, FTW!

Update!

Fingers crossed I can collect the car from Andy on Monday night :D A HUGE thank you to him for getting the car up and running.

I bought it with SLS issues but once these had been sorted the awful cold weather knocked out the fuel system and it wasnt possible to get the car running again so I wasn't able to collect the car before he went away on his winter hols.

I'm told it needed a seal on the pump feed pipe(leaking) but it starts and runs now.

The timing is brilliant because I go back to work on Tuesday and its been a right royal pain not having a 2nd car. The wife has been stranded at home with the nipper and when she has needed a car all of us have had to get up and out the house to drop me off at work.

Now that I am moving to an office a further 14 miles away from where I live this scenario is not ideal.

Anyway, the car needs a good clean inside and out as the previous owner had dogs and I have an allergy to dog hair! :'(

As far as I know everything is good with the car but I am still waiting for the previous owner to send the folder of service invoices and receipts to me. He lives in Scotland and the mail from there is still a problem due to the previous snow problems they have had there over the past few weeks.

So what are the plans for the car? Well immediately nothing but a good clean.

Then, once I have reviewed the service records I can determine what needs to be done. I don't think it's due a service, but it would be nice to keep on top of it.

Now I know the car has lots of service history and is in fact a 1999 and not the 1997 model I thought it was it has been decided that I will be getting the paintwork done before the minor corrosion that has started to appear sets in for good. The mileage is only just over 100k so this car could be around as a family wagon for a fair few years.

The car looks like it needs replacement front springs and there is a knocking noise from the engine which I am told is likely to be a pulley belt tensioner?

Aside from the possibility of changing the wheels the car will remain standard.

The one option it does not have which we expected it too was heated seats - maybe I should look into getting some retro-fitted before next winter?

Stu.

PS - I'm not keen on the granite effect trim so if I can easily change it to something else that would be good (say's the man who is planning on keeping his car 'standard'.

PPS - I will be doing something to the stereo but it will need to be simple. Probably upgrade the cabin speakers, run them from a high power head unit with the high-pass filter set to 80htz and a mono amp under the rear seat running a removable bass tube type thing in the back strapped to the rear seats?

Now I can see why I was prepping so much plastic bumper at yours a few weeks back. It makes quite a difference doesn't it.

I have today taken ownership of the car and I'm very impressed.

Smooth, comfortable and quick, though a little wallowy round the bends but I kind of expected as much from a comfy estate!

The roads today were slippy and wet so no real chance to give her a proper drive.

She is BIG and perfect for our needs.

A bit of research informs me that the modification to the management chip was a remap by superchips. Their website advertises this modification provides:
BHP: +44bhp increase over the original 177
NM: increase from 330 to 405
LB/Ft: gain of +55

I have no idea if these figures represent the true change to the engine but regardless, it goes well. It's as smooth as my old factory standard 2 litre and would outperform (in a straight line) my old 2.6 and the wife's mk3 Golf GTi 16v.

The insurance people didn't like the chip modification much and I ended up cancelling with my old one and going over to Adrian Flux who were very knowledgable and not phased by it at all.

I will post more photos when the sweets have been removed from the carpet and the dog hair has been vanquished!

Stu.

Glad the deal has all been done, Stu.

I've had the pleasure of driving that car...and I know it's quick with massive amounts of torque after Stevie had it re-mapped.

I didn't go too mad in it, being someone else's car, y'know?....Just a gentle, relaxed cruise at a nice steady 140+ mph along the A5, Stu! :driver:

;)

I don't know about you Andy...but I did notice a distinct metallic, clackterry/chattering noise at about 156 mph? Sort of an "alloy against alloy" noise?

I didn't hold it there for too long...maybe only 5 minutes at the very most (!)...but it seemed to me to be coming from somewhere low down just ahead of where my left foot was resting. The bottom of the engine is somewhere near that region, isn't it?

Seemed to calm down to a steady and more reassuring, simple 'thump...thump'...when I backed off to sub-140 mph again though. Sort of more like "alloy against cost iron" then?

I did notice that noise but put it down to the unfiltered waste veg oil i was running it on.
I thought a chip had got stuck in the fuel pump.

Andy/Derin,

I've not heard any odd noises at all. Quite strange that you have while you were driving?

Putting aside the possibility it was something from your music collection playing on the tape-deck, the only thing I can suggest is that perhaps while I am driving it there is a little less weight up front and therefore the springs and shocks are under less duress and the sump not so close to the tarmac?

I hope this weight comment hasn't embarrassed either of you, that certainly was not my attention and I thank you for raising this health and safety issue.

:)
