Hello and welcome. Do you mean the shims? Did you measure the gaps to see which sizes you needed? |

Hi there and welcome ![]() First things first, Haynes don't do a manual for the 2.5-16, although it might be helpful for some of the more basic W201 mechanical jobs. As said already, WIS is what you want - Mercedes-Benz's own workshop manual. Regarding your second question - oh dear! ![]() You need to return the parts you have bought as they are no good whatsoever ![]() The 2.3/2.5-16 'Cosworth' 190Es do no have hydraulic tappets/lifters. They have bucket tappets and use small solid shims that sit underneath to adjust the clearance between the tappet and the camshaft. You don't replace the tappets, what you do is replace the shim underneath to obtain the correct clearance. There should be a sticker on the slam panel under the bonnet with the correct specs which are different for the exhaust and inlet side, and will vary dependant upon temperature. Even a well shimmed engine will sound tappety, it's because you have sixteen valves with a small gap underneath - these are not zero-lash tappets as you would find on most engines. Having said all that, if the tappets are quite noticably out, it's probably due to valve seat recession if too tight and/or worn guides etc. What is the mileage/history of your car, how well does it run, any recent work etc? thanks for tht i'll ring them up on monday, yhea it taps quite badly drives ok, has a little stuter at higher speeds when warm. already replaced the fuel pumps which let me down the first month i had it, replaced the fuel filter when i gave it a good service, new hd leads and dizy cap which where worse for wear but yet the stutter still remains which is why i thought it could be caused by the noisey tappets. cars only done 116 000 miles on it but most of the parts look completly oringinal |

stutter could be lots of things unfortunatly, if your good with a multimeter there is a guide on here for eliminating components at fault. |
