Had a bad one (really bad) back in the '80s but the itch has started again, so I've now bought another... Fiat X1/9! ![]() ![]() The mechanical stuff has been well-sorted by the previous owner (in fact, all of the things that typically spoil modern X1/9 ownership). Drives really well - fun without having to trouble the speed limit. Though I've got to get some ballet shoes so I can get at the brake pedal without mashing the accelerator at the same time. ![]() But it will need some bodywork/paintwork - MOT time in Sept will dictate how much £££££s is required/spent. This 1500 model has had the original humungous bumpers removed, and I'll probably add the smaller 1300-style ones (when I can find some). (And thanks to forum-buddy Benzsc1 for helping me get her home!) |

I used to want one of these when I was a kid! There was a black and yellow one where I used to live that looked great. Truly retro nowadays. Nice one. |

Very nice manalishi, I've always liked the shape, might be a tight squeeze for me though.

Thaks chaps. I also had a thing for them since being a kid. I remember playground arguments - X1/9 vs TR7. Then the MR2 came along and did everything better, just without the same character. It's all a bit of a nostalgia trip at the moment. From the smell (!) to the way it turns into corners. Rust? Power? That's only the start of it, Jeremy. There are dozens of other issues, too. It's generally believed that Fiat management starved it of development. So more power is now a popular job. The Fiat/Lancia twincam was popular in the past, but not so much now. 120+bhp from the SOHC 1500 (lot of head work), or putting in a Uno Turbo engine (easier). The B16 VTEC Honda. Or even the 3.2 Alfa V6 (lots of metalwork). There's a crazy turbo one in Israel that eats anything (see YouTube)! ![]() As the years go on, I'll bet the new Fiat Abarth 500 engine gets slotted into a X1/9 at some point. To be honest though, I didn't buy one to get Vmax. I bought it for the way it goes around corners at 40-80mph. If the chassis proves to be sound enough to justify the work, I have to decide. Between a simple replica of the black Lido edition (which are now big money). Like this one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/michaelwardphotos/3318806367/in/photostream/ Or the full 'baby Ferrari' look in Rosso Corsa:

Rust buckets they may be but great fun I imagine. The guy Barry bought it off also had or was aquiring a special X19 that was built thouroughly and utilises the 2.0 volumex engine!!! This one is clean I know I spent around 6 hours trying to lug it home after the rear gearbox seal spat on the Vw LT!! Spent way to much time at Gatwick service station on my own!! Still the drive from Chelmsford to Woodbridge at 11:30 Sat night was plenty of fun in the E55 to collect Barry so he could continue with his new baby! I admit a change from a Benz but being a Fiat owner also I understand the soft spot Nice one Barry glad you got back ok! |

Yeah - the return trip in the X was completely different to the E55 trip. At about half the speed, too. It was also too dark to find out where all the switchgear was, and I was squinting trying to see the instruments in the gloom of Fiat's milliWatt dashlight bulbs. ![]() Si's E55 flies. So much car for the money. Effortless torque and proper comfort. Surprisingly tight in the curves, too. The X1/9 = very noisy at motorway speeds. In daylight I can see that there's currently a window-roof seal that's not fitting right. And the upgraded sports exhaust has a resonance that comes on at about 65mph. It's a car for enthusiastic B-road jaunts on sunny Sundays. Thats just MHO though - some of the owners club bods do full-on European camping tours in it! |

Fly she does!! I must admit though Barry I was wondering at which point should I have opened her up properly !! The 55 that is TBH I was whacked from the day in the LT with the G/box vibration from hell! So i kept it legalish lol.Anyway the X19 sounded healthy to me mate I do hope you have plenty of fun and dont stay away from here to much I am sure you will inherit the WXXX itch again!! |

That Lido edition was the one an Ex of mine had ..... I drove it loads , was superb around the twisty bits as you say , but it started to fall apart as soon as she drove it out of the showroom ... tbh we need more cars like that , the way it looked and handled that is ... Jeremy |
