Hi, I've just bought a metallic Beryll blue(?) Mercedes 190e 2.0 for my partner. We didn't actually set out to buy one - she wanted a cheap car which would handle occasional long motorway jaunts well, and which would suit her 6 foot frame. After much searching around, she fell in love with a complete wreck of a C-class, so I had to find her something better... Several weeks later, after just missing a silver 190d auto with leather interior, I came across a very nice looking manual 1992 190e 2.0 in a fairly unusual (I think) colour, with 155k on the clock and full service history. It was being sold by an older gentleman who had serious health issues, which had meant he'd only covered 5,000 miles in the past 5 years! After taking it for a quick spin I'd found the handbrake was seizing a bit, the door locks were sticking and the clutch was rather fierce, but that wasn't surprising given how much time it had spent just sitting around... Just under 600 quid and a slightly emotional farewell later, the car was ours. I've spent the past week clocking up around 600 miles in it, which has cleared out the cobwebs a bit, and I've sorted out the sticking central locking with some wd40 and a bit of pot-luck when removing the door cards. I've rather enjoyed driving the 190e - it feels like a big Capri (I've owned several of Dagenham's finest over the years) which can actually go around corners! From next week it'll be in my partner's hands and I'll be back to my daily driver. I'd love to keep it myself, but it'd be a shame to wreck this shiny 190e by doing 2,400 miles a month on twisty roads; besides which, I'd need a second mortgage for the petrol. Still, one day soon, no doubt a 190d will be sitting next to it on the drive... About the only problem I've hit is a strong smell of burning oil, which appears be oil leaking from the 'rocker' cover area onto the exhaust manifold. Since I've never dealt with a Merc 190 before, I can't decide whether to start out by investigating the 'rocker' gasket for leaks, or whether I should see if the the emission control system is blocked, causing excessive pressure under the oil filler. Anyone got any ideas which is more likely? Marc ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us Edited by melston2000, Sun Jan 30, 2011 10:41 pm.

Thanks! It certainly feels very different to my daily driver (a diesel Citroen) - much more relaxing to drive, and I love pretending to line pedestrians up in the 'crosshairs' on the front ![]() I'll no doubt become very intimately involved with it's engine over the next few months, and will definitely be 'borrowing' it quite a bit... |

I expected something entirely different, the word virgin always makes me smile.best of luck with the car,for the oil to leak on the exhaust its probably the rocker cover ,or a spillage when filling, the pipe from the rocker cover to the air filter might have come off, full service history ,should dismiss the emission control system.but easy to check with the air filter removed. I have had three 190s the one with the full service history was by far the best ,it is the one I have now. |

I'm not planning to get _that_ well acquainted with the car! ![]() Thanks for the advice on the rocker cover, etc. I'll get a new gasket ordered and investigate the air filter pipe. I guess the oil filler cap might be a bit suspect as well - with the cam chain just underneath it, I suspect it must throw a fair bit of oil in that direction... |

I've got a Beryl Blue 190 as well. Stupid name for a lovely colour. Mines has the hot oil smell also. It's the rocker cover that leaks a bit. Quality Mercedes motoring for the price of a dodgey Fiat Punto. |

Thanks, hope we'll still have ours in 10 years time, though with the way petrol prices are going, it'll probably be horse-drawn by then! |

It certainly is a daft name. According to a quick Google search it's another name for Emerald, but I reckon the person who came up with the colour rather liked someone called Beryl
