Better not to do it too often as the sediment in the bottom of the tank could can cause problems. |

Thats's the way to do it, always leave a quarter of fuel in the tank so all the sh*t in the tank doesn't go into the engine when your running on fumes. I dont leave a quarter in but always fill up as soon as the reserve light goes on |

I am not sure I can remember the original question but yes the 55L tank has a 7litre reserve. I dont know your mpg but assuming its 25 (total guess) then thats 63 km. |

A few years ago, to run a diesel dry would have been the worst possible advice to give! Diesels needed to be re-primed before they would start again, and even now, I would not recommend or even suggest it! Apart from the other point made later, about the sediment (gunge/junk) at the bottom of the tank, which you avoid sucking through the system despite fuel filters, the easiest way in this day and age would be to carry 5 additional litres in a diesel fuel container. When the warning light comes on and stays on, and you suspect that you're a distance from the civilisation and therefore the next filling station ... pull over and use the containers contents. I would recommend you to use the fuel anyway after about 6-9 months and refill it. Not because the fuel 'goes off' in any respect, but I consider it good practice. In any respect, in a 'real' emergency, the remaining fuel in your tank plus the container doubles your range to the next pump! As for what mileage you would cover under the 'low fuel' warning, obvious as stated elsewhere, the load in the vehicle, the type of road (Motorway or urban or countryside), your driving style and the state of tune of your engine can all contribute to a wide variance in final mpg figure. To summerise, carry a container, use if required, and don't run it dry!

I just wanted to add diesel does go off, if left for significant amounts of time 'diesel bug' can form which is kind of algae. It clogs filters and is a total pain. I had it in my 2.0d which had been sat for a year and had to totally strip down the fuel system to get rid of it. Also, the 190d has a self priming system so running dry isnt too much of a problem. Not advised because the fuel pump wont be lubricated if there is no fuel but it will prime on its own eventually. |
