"" Wait till the light comes on, reset the trip, then drive till it stops. ""
^o)

A few years ago, to run a diesel dry would have been the worst possible advice to give! Diesels needed to be re-primed before they would start again, and even now, I would not recommend or even suggest it!

Apart from the other point made later, about the sediment (gunge/junk) at the bottom of the tank, which you avoid sucking through the system despite fuel filters, the easiest way in this day and age would be to carry 5 additional litres in a diesel fuel container.

When the warning light comes on and stays on, and you suspect that you're a distance from the civilisation and therefore the next filling station ... pull over and use the containers contents. I would recommend you to use the fuel anyway after about 6-9 months and refill it. Not because the fuel 'goes off' in any respect, but I consider it good practice.

In any respect, in a 'real' emergency, the remaining fuel in your tank plus the container doubles your range to the next pump!

As for what mileage you would cover under the 'low fuel' warning, obvious as stated elsewhere, the load in the vehicle, the type of road (Motorway or urban or countryside), your driving style and the state of tune of your engine can all contribute to a wide variance in final mpg figure.

To summerise, carry a container, use if required, and don't run it dry!

Mike it was a humorous reply, note the " ".
I was hoping a trained marmoset would be able to spot it for what it was.
I am in no way telling the op to run his tank out and suck all the **insert swear word here** from the bottom of his tank.
Sorry for the confusion

I'm only really here for the Kitchens

Is this 'crud at the bottom of the tank' actually a real effect ?

The amount of fuel in the tank shouldnt effect what goes out the outlet, which is at the bottom anyway. The only thing I can imagine it would effect is perhaps stuff floating on the TOP of the fuel which is brought down to the outlet. Like water.

"" I just wanted to add diesel does go off, if left for significant amounts of time ""

"" the 190d has a self priming system so running dry isn't too much of a problem. Not advised because the fuel pump won't be lubricated if there is no fuel, but it will prime on it's own eventually. ""

I thought that would be the case now, hence my use of the 'past tense' .. needed.

However, I had hoped that technology today would have meant that Diesel was even less likely to go 'stale'

Anyway, Kenny thanks for the info, I am much obliged to be able to update my knowledge. ;)
