I guess the clock would read less, I mean she would go faster and economise in petrol, but would be a little bit of timid in taking-off and up-hills |

As said speedo will read less speed than actual speed. And torque at the wheels will be less which means slower acceleration times, and slightly different shift points. |

For a road car it really depends on driving style preference. We have run both and found that the 3.07 fit our style: we do not drift, do not do burn-outs but like useable long legged gears and relaxed high speed cruising. First gear with the 3.27 was "too short": we found ourselves shifting into second before reaching the front gate on a 75meter driveway then back into first again to wait for traffic to clear. Silly. Second gear is reasonably long and useful in creeping traffic. Third gear was a dream: useful in both slow traffic and the occasional break to reasonable speed and back. Also very useful in banzai overtaking when down shifted from fifth. Fourth: nice on fast twisties and as a general overtaking gear when downshifted from fifth. Fifth: relaxed cruising with more top speed than any sane person needs, with the blower we have seen 255kph on the accurate clock. (when changing diff ratios get the speedo head from the donor car: Merc matches speedo heads to diff ratios) For a road car it is all personal preference. Its different for a race car that on a long straight will only see ~200kph, a super low diff ratio makes sense: first is never used and second very very rarely. The top three gears do all the work. hey Bob, from what you say the 3.07 would suit me better..I have the same niggles with the useless 1st gear..and you've basically described what i want from the car perfectly..!! Speedo head..you mean the complete clock to transplant into mine..?? Cheers mate, Cosser..!! Edited by cosser, Fri Feb 18, 2011 9:30 pm.

Yes, you will need the complete speedo/clock from a donor car with the appropriate new diff ratio. You may want to change the speedo face, specially on a 16V. Here is how: 1--bend the speedo needle up so it clears the stop pin and let it rotate (anti-clockwise) and come to rest at its "no tension" neutral position somewhere to the right of the stop pin. Note this position because after changing the face, you will re-install the needle in the same neutral position. 2--carefully pull the needle from its spindle pin. This where you can bugger the thing up so be careful, use a small needle nose plier to hold, steady, and take the strain from the spindle pin as you pull the needle off. 3--the speedo face is held on with two REALLY tiny screws. Remove & exchange faces 4--carefully re-install the needle in its neutral position 5--move the needle to the left of the stop pin, bend it back down, and you are done. Regards, bobf |

There were evolutionary changes in the meter cluster wiring that may preclude a straight cluster for cluster swap. But try it anyway; if it works and all the cluster meters & idiot lights function correctly, fine. If not, then just swap the donor speedo clock into your existing cluster. Cheers, bobf |

The clocks and diff are from a car registered in the same year as mine so hopefully they should both be the same version and it will all match up..that's the theory anyway..lol..!! Thanks for the advice mate..!! Cosser..!! |
