Hello all, About 2 years ago i paid close to $1.5k to have new cat, resonator and muffler installed on my 1.8 The mechanic who did the work assured me he knew what he was doing (He does afterall own a mercedes and bosch certified garage..) Long story short.. he obviously had no clue what he was doing. he mix-matched 2.3 and 1.8 parts, forgot to put 3\4 of the exhaust hangers.. all in all a HUGELY embarrassing job. I brought the car back to him 5 times for him to fix it and each time it would get a little worse.. until one day I went and told him I don't want you touching this car anymore, just acknowledge that you didn't know what you were doing when installing the exhaust... I don't want a refund or exchange or anything! Just an acknowledgement that you didn't know what you were doing! ...he obviously never did. So during the next 2 years i've somehow managed to get it "somewhat" properly installed (as proper as it can get with a 2.3 muffler on a 1.8 exhaust..) So the other day i'm driving and everytime i hit a bump I hear a little rattle in the back... Until i hit 1 slightly larger bump... i just had enough time to look at the rear view to see a little metal pipe fall off the car... I pull over the car, and go pick up what turns out to be the downpipe to the muffler. .....He coulnd't even weld the exit pipe to the muffler correctly So now my question and the reason for this thread..: How important is the downpipe and tip to the muffler? because honestly if it isn't absolutely essential I don't think i want to re-weld it... the car sounds absolutely fantastic at higher revs now lol she's screaming! and i'm convinced i've gotten an extra 1 or 2 hp hehe. |

as long as the exhaust fumes are not going to enter the car ,don't worry about it, I once fitted a four inch exhaust to a previous 190 sounded great. most tail pipes are behind the body kit anyway, I got more hp with the big bore exhaust and the straight through centre box. |

Oh wonderful, if its only a question of fumes getting in the cockpit..i can live with that hehe. The car doesn't have A|C so in summer time the windows and sunroof are always open. haha your old 190 really must have sounded lovely with the straight thru box and 4" pipe! |

If you have the standard bumpers and the tail pipe (tip) is off, exhaust gas is hitting and heating the rear bumper. So in long term you will get some deformation to the bumper and loads of black soot |

^^ shoot.. i was afraid of that. Could i not install some heat reflecting foil in back of the rear bumper to counter that? ...the car seriously souds lovely without the muffler tip hehe.. not to mention the back looks alot cleaner as there is no visible sign of an exhaust when looking at the back... It just looks very clean EDIT POST: While re-reading my post I realised that over time the black soot buildup on the foil will cover the reflective properties and will still be heated...
