The rear box has a big hole in it, the middle box is genuine Mercedes and in very good condition, the front section (cat i think) no holes but rattling.

Now, £180-200 gets me the rear box (£250 stainless) which is all i really need for now, but im a little worried about the rattle coming from the front box, can only hear the rattling if you under the car and banging the box/cat.

What do i do ?

The rattle could be the baffles , If the rear has a hole then get it welded ?

You could get a replacement backbox for a lot cheaper than that! And then when the resonator does finally start making too much noise you can get a stainless shop to put you in a new resonator on your existing downpipes which will be under a £100 from experience when the time comes...

Or alternativerly ditch the whole system for one fat pipe :D

Hi Toff had a quote back in March from the quik fitters for £614 for full system for the 2.6 non cat.

Almost gave me a Heart attack when he told me

i went to my local Powerflow dealer Topgear in Hayes Had mine repaired .

Two Stainless steel front pipes New centre Box and 2 more pipes to back box which was already a Powerflow Cost £240 .

It took the guy nearly 3 hours to make it.

i Have seen a topgear advertising on the south Coast Bridport if i Remember Rightly.

I think a full custom is the best option. And if you have to replace the CAT just buy a universal replacement -preferably metal core- and get to the exhaust shop to weld it.

I did a custom setup on mine with 2 magnaflow open silencers and a metallic 200CPI CAT from MIJ exhaust. I paid £100 for the CAT and £160 for the boxes & 3 meters of stainless but I did all the welding myself.

can you get them to make up stainless in sections ie front when it goes then back when it goes and then the middle so build up to a full system bit by bit? or is it better to replace the lot scarpping good bits just a thought

Im sure i can Alan. I was quoted £250 for a stainless rear box (fitted) by Mike Stokes Racing which is a small garage just down the road from me. They were the ones that said my cat was rattling, didn't know i had a cat.

The biggest mistake exhaust-wise I made was going cheap. I replaced the original genuine Merc exhaust on my 2 litre with an aftermarket brand at a local exhaust centre. I think it was a 'Tiemax' or something similar.

It didn't sound the same and even with several adjustments there was always the odd occasion it would knock and rattle.

When Andy and I removed the exhaust from my 2.6 we discovered that everything bar the back-box was original so we simply patch welded the crappy bits and I made a mental note to save for a genuine Merc exhaust as, at the time, I had plans to keep the car.

Once it was welded up it sounded fab, like a sports exhaust and could hear those two extra cylinders through the exhaust as well as feel them from the accelerator pedal use!

I have heard a full stainless on a 16v and to be honest I didn't like the sound. It just didn't sound deep enough, though I accept this might just be the type of exhaust or gauge of steel.

You are correct stu. The selection of materials makes a huge difference.
I hate a farting sound on a Merc so I used 2mm wall thickness pipe, double loop middle box and straight rear.
Additionally to deaden the sound a bit but without affecting performance the core of the boxes was 2.5" but the pipe OD was 2.25".
But that was for a 1.8L engine.
Same can be done with any car it will just cost a bit more. But at the end it's all about quality of components and build quality.

Stu, couldn't agree more you cant beat Genuine Mercedes.

But, how do i justify spending more then the value of the car on a new exhaust, even 50% of the value?
I mean you wouldn't expect someone with a 20k car spending 10k on a new exhaust system.

on the subject of exhausts, viper exhausts a small business near me made my stainless exhaust, i havnt had the down pipes done yet but will do when ive got the money, the guy that makes and fits them used to work for Aston martin, i stayed at the work shop while he cut the old exhaust off, he said i should notice the car would be slightly more responsive after the new exhaust was fitted and showed me why by cutting one of the old boxes in half the pipes that enter the box through the end plates are pushed through to far and are not flush with the plates and only welded on the outside so restricting the flow badly coming out of any of the boxes he said this is common with most standard exhaust systems, obviously this save alot of time and work when making the exhaust in the factory, the boxes he fits are welded inside and out flush with the end plate and he was right i did notice the car is a bit more responsive now which doesnt really matter on a road car but could be usefull on a track car

i'd get a stainless system from longlife, lifetime gaurentee, and reasonably priced, can even do finance. I got a full system for 370 and paid 30 quid a month for it.

I paid £250 for a Proflow stainless exhaust earlier in the year. Lifetime warranty, handbuilt on the car, took around 2.5hrs. And that included cutting the cat out and putting in a freeflowing box. So, 3 boxes, pipes, all in stainless, any exhaust tip you want, for £250. Bargain! And it's the higher grade stainless too. It's in Birmingham if you're anywhere near there.

Here you are Toff mate!

Linky!

You need to confirm if you have a Cat but I am pretty sure that 1990 uk cars were not fitted with them.

Mork, Bloody awesome price, might be worth the drive up to Birmingham as my local garage quoted £250 just for the rear box.

Thanks Chris, but why?

Is it something to do with the fuel mixture and exhaust gases?

Yes exactly. Even without a catalytic converter on the car your version of the KE injection will still require the sensor to work properly.

i thought about doing the birmingham trip for my exhaust as it was cheaper, but weighing up the fuel to the cheaper option wasnt benificial. Also got told that the b-ham place was as not good quality as longlife and that the service is terrible.

I think the bloke just wanted me to buy from his shop but i havnt had any probs so far.....
