I have a few problems with my recently purchased 190e 2.0, I don't really know much about 190s or the common causes of faults so I thought I would see if anyone can point me in the right direction to get started. 1. Cold starting, does not want to stay running and I have to nurse it but only for the first minute. 2. Tachometer does not work, the fuse looks good though. 3. Sounds like it is idling too fast when warm/hot 4. The central locking unlocks the boot and the fuel filler but none of the doors. Thank you in advance for any help/suggestions. |

Items one and three point in the direction of the microswitch on the throttle linkage. The throttle cable should be just slack enough for it to close when the pedal is released. The switch allows the ecu to take control of the idle settings when running. Item 2 I have no idea other than has sensing wire become disconnected somewhere? Item 4 sounds like a broken vacuum hose, probably near the vaccum pump which is under the rear passenger seat. |

Hi 1, 3' And 4 could be a connected fault, (due to a weak mixture). A vacuum hose off somewhere as Big ben suggests, check them all. One could be porous, split or even slipped off and I would think those three probs. would be solved when you find the culprit.

Thank you both for the advice, I will have a look at it tomorrow if it does not rain. Could you tell me where the tacho gets its signal from, ECU, Alternator or Ignition? Edited by Sanguinarius, Mon May 23, 2011 12:59 am.

Have a look Here. The connector is shown in 54-152. The full manual is here as well for US spec cars but mostly its the same for European cars. |

I checked the checked the central locking pump, the line to the doors had been disconnected and that branch of the T blocked so I guessed it was probably leaking and a quick check confirmed it was, I have no idea where the pipe to the doors might be leaking or the route it takes. . The throttle linkage was not returning to close the micro switch, it appeared to be missing a return spring so I fitted one, the switch now closes and I checked the switch with a ohm meter and the switch does close correctly, however this made no difference to the cold starting/stalling, I have not checked if the hot idle is still too fast yet. Any further ideas one the cold start problem? |

If the engine has been re-tuned for idle without the micro switch closing it will need readjustment. Also check the cold start valve is working ok. It should stay open until the engine reaches a certain temperature. You can find all the test proceedures in the electronic manual that stwat posted in the technical section. Both these faults are common in cars that have been worked on by people that dont understand them. |

Just a brief update. Not had chance to investigate the cold start any further since last posting. However since replacing the missing spring the fuel consumption went from approx 30 mpg to 34 mpg, but not effect to cold starting or idle speed. The tacho now works sometimes, but the fast speed on the wiper does not anymore. Unfortunately I am currently on crutches after injuring my ankle so I won't be able to look into anything for a little while. |

The cold start problem could poss be the dissy cap and rotary arm try giving them a good clean. I've got the same problem with mine gave the dissy a clean and it sorted it for a short while but they do need changing. |
