Does anyone have the EPC diagram for the Breather Hoses (8-valve fuel-injected M102)? I know I need to replace the main piece coming off the Rocker Cover (it's split), but there is another hoes heading out of it, towards the back of the engine, and I think that needs replacing too. Part numbers, photos and diagrams all much appreciated.

Careful when purchasing a replacement, they're two different types. Make sure you get the correct one that branches off to fit. |

Ok, it's the two hoses marked in Orange:![]() Not sure what the differences in your two lower diagrams are Matt (or indeed which would apply to my 1993 1.8 Auto), so I picked one at random. That's roughly what the parts look like though, and that's their location. |

The difference is the control valves. You will have the lower image with the Bosch Idle Air Valve. Anyway.... Hose (62) from the rocker cover - A1020942587 (there are numerous variations though depending on vehicle but that is the main number for it) Hose (35) from crank breather to idle air distributor - A1020942187 (again there are a few types depending on engine date etc but that number is for the latest) |

Just replaced all three on my sportline Neil as there were splits and cracks and slightly rough idle as the third one to the icv was also US. Made a noticeable difference and totally smooth idle. Just got to clean up some of the oil which leaked sprayed around under the airbox. Andy |

Don't suppose you have a P/N for that third hose, do you, Andy? Assuming they're all the same age under there, I really should replace that too. Chasing down a small air leak that I suspect has been the cause of my high cold idle speed for a long time. |

Right chaps, parts acquired and the job is underway. - Took the Airbox off (three 10mm nuts, piece o'cake). - Removed first y-shaped hose. Rubber had become incredibly hard, and when I finally prised it off the push-fittings, the end nearest the Rocker Cover broke into bits. - Removed the second (shortest) hose. Had to undo a small Vac hose for this, and also undo a re-usable cable-tie that was holding some wires down. This second hose has a small plastic junction in it (see lower photo) - Its not possible to pull out with bare hands, the old hose isn't giving way. I'm going to carefully slice the old hose open and prise it out. - Removed the third hose, after undoing another re-usable cable-tie, that one came off quite easily but has another plastic junction (again, in lower photo) in it that I will have to remove. My question (and yes, I do have one!) is - should I be attempting to clean these two plastic junction pieces? They're quite oily, one more than the other. I'm guessing I don't want to put water anywhere near them, but could I soak them or rinse them through with anything else? ![]() ![]() |

Neil! You should be ashamed of your dirty engine bay tut tut Get the WD40 out and give them a good clean. Also water won't be a prob as long as you dry them out fully. Get stuck in

Neil, I was doing this exact job 2 weeks ago on mine. Rinsing will do nothing to all that dirt. When my old breather hose gave up, I just tool a WD40 spray and injected it all over the engine bay. that softened the dirt and when my new hose arrived I replaced it then removed filter and I blocked all the openings with tape. took the pressure washer out and some degreaser and I cleaned everything. then just went with some WD40 on cable connections and plugs and start the engine so it will dry out. That will keep it clean for a few years I think

Andy, I don't know how often you lift the bonnet on your cars fella, but those re-usable cable ties are OE MB items. They guide the various electronics around the bay, often tethering them to other groups of hoses & cables. Or, as in the case of the large cable in the top of my engine bay picture, to a strategically-placed (factory) bracket on the Rocker Cover. There are quite a few of them, from around the engine block all the way over to the ABS and ECE Modules. Better get your backside down to the Dealership and buy a few ![]() Anyway, it's all back together. Decided to err on the side of caution, cleaned the Junction pieces out with dry lint-free cloths. If there wasn't a breather hose leak, the engine probably wouldn't be so effing dirty, ya cheeky barstewards... By the way - ADMIN - could we please move this thread to the appropriate Technical section, what with it being so darn informative? ![]() Edited by Neil, Thu Aug 25, 2011 5:13 pm.

Hi Neil, Bonnet is always up. What I meant was that I was surprised to see cable ties there as Hose Clamps are specified on the EPC diagram for the air breather hoses where a fastener is needed. Mine had no fastenings on at all. Good job well done. Edited by aemt, Thu Aug 25, 2011 9:28 pm.

Cheers Yes, the hoses are all push-fit. Bloody tight fit too, no need for clamps.Tbh neither of the EPC diagrams in this thread correspond exactly to what's in my engine bay. Particularly, the hose in this diagram: ![]() On my car, it was the shorter Y-shaped hose with thick ribs on it (the one on the right in my photo of them off the car). |

Hopefully the idle is now smoother. And you have stopped the oil splatter around the engine bay. I use a spray degreaser, long paint brush and a water sprayer to clean up. Then a good wipe to dry everything i can reach and spray of WD40. Getting the engine up to temperature dries the bits I cannot reach |

The idle was always smooth, just too high from cold (~1200rpm) - it's settled down to about 1000, but I still think there are other air leaks to chase down. Over the past few years the various electronic components and their setup have gradually been eliminated, but the car still idles high from cold. It settles down to normal (~750rpm) after 5 minutes, drives normally and returns normal mpg. It never stalls. Took it for a service recently, the mechanic was having a listen all around the intake side with a basic stethoscope. He could hear air rushing in somewhere down there, and passed it to me to have a listen. Yep, air is flowing around down there. Remembering back to the day the car's cold idle speed changed (it was very sudden), a loss or gain of pressure rings true with how it 'felt', if you know what I mean. After telling him about the various checks done on the Bosch system, the replacement AFM from Andy, etc, this mechanic came out with the phrase 'You can't get air down a wire'. His theory is that the engine is getting extra air from somewhere, and it's more likely to be from a split or detached hose, or a perished gasket. He pinched a few hoses that he knew would normally cause the car to stall if restricted. The car didn't stall, it just bogged down to about 400rpm and kept running. The guy has worked on more K-Jet Golfs than I've had hot dinners, and track-preps old BMWs. I trust his judgement. He's only about an hour or so from me too. At some point, I think the AFM needs to come off for a thorough chase-down of this possible leak. |

Well the two versions are... A102 094 56 82 - "Up to Indent number: A 373288, F 334103" A102 094 17 87 - "As of Indent number: A 373288, F 334103" Those numbers you'll find in the second part of your VIN number. My guess would be that the first one is the correct one but its better to check usually. Edited by MercManCraig, Thu Aug 4, 2016 1:13 pm.

Hello everyone, I have been reading this thread with great interest because it may be the answer to my problem as i have been searching for remedies to a problem I have with exhaust fumes being drawn in to the car when stationary. There do indeed seem to be several different types of hose but I cannot see the photographs that have been put up because of bl**dy Photobucket to see if the hoses are the same or similar. Number 62 is a very loose fit at the rocker cover end and want to replace but need a part number. The rest seem ok but maybe a little stiff or hard and not very "rubbery" and wonder if i should just change them all. The engine runs well but the exhaust problem inside the car has got to the stage where i either fix it or sell the car and let someone else sort it out but this 190e has got to be the best car i have ever had and it would be a last resort to sell it and by a sportline. Please could someone help. |
