Hi, Spent the whole weekend working on my 190D, (dash, centre console, instrument panel all out and new ones in) will be posting up a report on all that soon... but first I have a big problem! As we were taking the car out for the first time after spending many hours on it, the passenger side halfshaft snapped! As the car is quite high mileage I'm not too surprised and I'm actually fairly happy it happened on a quite road and not like the last time it happened (taking a righthand turn on a dual carriage way at rush hour... near disaster!). Anyway I'm stuck down here in a small town in the south of Ireland and trying to find parts locally. Does anyone know if the halfshaft off a 190E will do the job for a 190D 2ltr? Any info is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Paul. |

Shrekky & Richy ( i think) have both broken Diesel halfshafts, so hopefully they will know for sure! I would imagine though it's the same as a 2.0 one as only diff ratios were different!! But don't quote me on that!!

stempies is right, driveshafts from a 1.8/2.0 petrol will fit...................the 2.0D uses alot of parts from the petrol counterparts, brakes, suspension, bearings the lot, to the point as stempies said the only difference is the diff ratios, even then its not noticable,i'm running a diff from a 2.0 auto petrol car without any problems |

That's brilliant, thanks for that info. Following up some leads on 190s around here that I can get one off... fingers crossed I can get one tomorrow! Will put up some pictures as things develop. I was told it is not an unusual problem with the 190s when it happened on the drivers side about 2 years back, have been kind of waiting in fear since then for the other side to go. More to follow... |

all of the above i also have a theory it quite often has something to do with failing rear wheel bearings |

Mine was because I dumped the clutch at 6k 1 mile from my parents house when retiring the car for the 16v engine conversion......that was three years ago and it's not moved under it's own steam since! (BTW, this type of abuse was not what cause the issues with the S3, I honestly promise!) |

When the one on the other side snapped about 2 years back I was told by a mechanic that he heard the shafts have a really thin hole running through the middle of them for some reason and this may contribute to why they snap... I have no idea if there is any truth in this though. Got the problem sorted on Wednesday evening... Here's how: After you kindly informed me that a petrol 190 uses the same shaft I called up the cheapest advertised 190 in Ireland, which thankfully was in the same county I was stuck in! It also had a fully functioning tilt and slide sunroof, which I've been looking to fix on mine for ages, and it's so badly broken that I'll need a whole new unit. So got a bus to where it was and bought it for 650 euro. Drove it back, got a local mechanic to take the shaft out, and another one to stick it in (in exchange for me washing an Integra Type R he was selling. The shaft that came out was very stiff on either end and grease level inside the boot was fairly low. I suppose these should be checked/changed regularly? Anyway, once the new shaft was in I was able to hit the road and she's driving better than ever! So now I have 3 190s.... and one is stuck at a garage 100 miles from me! Here's some pictures and a sort of an explanation of how it was done: Took off the wheel and jacked it up securely. Crawled in under it a few hours before we were due to start work on it and saturated it with WD40, cleaned off the massive amount of dirt that was caking the bolts, and repeatedly oiled each one. Using an impact gun the bolts came off suprisingly easy, was dreading this bit going wrong as god knows when those bolts were last off. Was having nightmares about rounded bolt heads. Took off the diff end of the shaft, the 6 bolts and the 2 washer type pieces. ![]() So then we could see this piece that comes out from the diff ![]() Then we had to get the other snapped piece out. ![]() Then the nut on the outside of the wheel was loosened and we tapped this piece through. Then we stuck the new(-ish) shaft in. this is the one: ![]() One thing to watch out for was to make sure the handbrake cable doesn't go the wrong side of the shaft as it goes in... obvious thing I'm sure but I'd say it's definitely happened more than once! Hope this is helpful to someone, I was surprised at how easy it all is when you have the right tools. If there's anything that I missed or should include please point it out! What's the general opinion about maintaining the shafts? Seems sensible to me that the boots need to be replaced after a decade or so of high mileage and I reckon I'll do it on the shaft I've just put in. Fairly sure the stiffness in movement played a role in causing the break, will be paying a lot more attention to this type of thing from now on anyway. Edited by RandomTox, Sun Jul 17, 2011 12:01 pm.
