it could be a driveshaft( although unlikely, joints are pretty bullet proof), is there any play in them if you twist them back and forth ? but again its quite possibly one of the rubber doughnuts on the propshaft ;)

Could you describe the noise?
Soft, or hard?
Dull, or metallic?
Does it coincide with the gearbox shifting from 2nd to 3rd?

Propshaft 'doughnuts' (large bushes, one at either end) are a common service item on 190s, and it pays to replace the Propshaft Centre Bearing at the same time (this bearing is suspended inside a bush that also perishes over time). I think it might cost you about sixty quid in parts for all 3 bits if you visit ECP or GSF. Can't recall, it's a while since mine were done.

Also worth inspecting is the rear subframe, which is another collection of rubber and metal. 4 main subframe bushes, big buggers that benefit from replacement.
Also have a look around the Diff, check that all mounting bolts are present and torqued up.

HTH

:)

It's a hard banging noise and goes just before gear change .I've check both dohnut rings look fine and no cracks no movement and the center bearing I done two years ago . The only reason I think its drive shaft i. I took them both off and one feels a lil tight when I move cv joint around it sorta jams and I swapped them from side to side room car out and the noise was a lot louder . Odd because the noise to me does not sound like drive shaft too me sounds like. Rubber diff mount witch Mercedes don't have they it fix strights to subframe .

can you clarify what you "swapped from side to side" whether it was the full driveshafts or just the cv joints? :o

CV joints should be a little stiff but should still move in all directions freely

the diffs in these cars are prone to wear and diff-backlash especially in auto's

I swapped both drive shafts over from nearside to offside and the noise got much lounder and I have found slight movement in the offside one now . Witch was the nearside . So to me maybe because it got lounder after the swap it should be drive shaft . But Im sure drive shafts knock not bang :'(

:S they are sided, one is longer than the other, it might only be a few millimetres but believe me its enough to make a difference

hmmmmmmm i could be wrong

could be something they changed between pre and post facelift cars ?, because theres a definate difference between the driveshafts on my car(one is 4mm longer), so i just assumed thats the way it was ( i had tried to figure why that would be the case if the diff is in the centre of the car), well its either that or someone who owned the car before me , had a driveshaft changed, and a wrong one was put on feckknows it might also explain why i go through wheel bearings on one side, despite changing the hub carrier and bearing housing ^o)
