Hi everyone. We run a 1993 2.0 petrol 190. It needed a replacement diff at 30,000 mile (Mercs paid half as goodwill). It's now done 187,000 and there is a whine starting at the back again, probably the diff again. Can anyone tell me the best place to get a reconditioned unit please? Is it easyish to replace by a non-Mercedes, but well trained mechanic? Thanks a lot. David |

This is aery simple job, i replaced mine a year ago. What happens is the oil seals wear and oil leeks out the bearings wear and the gears don't mesh properly. If you replace the bearings you will not solve the problem as the gears will have worn and the noise comes from the gears not meshing together the noise isn't from the bearings, it is from the gears. Get a haynes manual it really is very straight forward. I purchased a second hand one from a breakers all a bit of a gamble, if you do get a second hand one make sure you replace the oil seals all three of them. |
