Dear friends

I have a weird problem with my 190E 1.8 manual. Two days ago i was traveling in the motorway and when i was reaching the speed of 110 Km/h up to the speed of 130 km/h regardless engine rpm or selected gear in the gearbox the car makes a very loud sound as if i am in a prop aircraft. today i had my tires balanced and aligned in order to see if that was the fault but tires are in perfect condition. so i went to my mechanic and he discovered that the vibration damper on the shaft is in very bad condition. could that be the problem? can this cause a thumping sound? and can i remove it with out replacing it until i find a new one ( the dealership needs 2 weeks and the aftermarket 4 weeks)
please advice
thanks in advance

It sounds like your describing the propshaft flexdisc ? Its like rubber donut that holds 2 parts of the propshaft together.

If its really worn/loose you could get significant vibration.

In the uk they are easy to find at dealers or aftermarket shops. Or ebay.

You cant drive without one, the pics in this thread will show you why, it joins your shaft together :-

you can lay under the car and twist the prop with your hand, if its failed or worn you will see it quite clearly when you twist the prop.

Normally when they fail you get a clunking when going into 1st or reverse.

There is a vibration damper just behind the gearbox also. Safe to drive with it removed.
