I decided to buy the W124 230E I talked about last week :driver:
I've managed to scrape some cash together and have found a classic insurance policy for £118 pa for 3k miles pa ( Peter Best ) cheapest by miles I rang them all "wallbang"
I'm really happy with the car
The Body is mint ( Had 2 new wings and a quality £1000 respray in the last 6 months all painted expect the Saccos and the roof )
I love the light and bright interior ( I think it's leather not MB-tex )
It's very smooth and quiet compared with the 190Ds agricultural charm and I love the autobox :)
There are a couple of issues though
1/ Since I test drove the car last week it's had a new battery and now the ABS light is illuminated :(
2/ When there is less than 7ish litres of fuel in the tank the fuel gauge is eratic and seems to rise and fall for no reason :(
But I'm pleased that I bought her
The only trouble is Mrs Marko190D is on the policy and as fallen for it big style after a drive in her
I'm gonna have to hide the keys :D
Here are some pics ( Taken with my mobile so sorry for the poor quality )

Nice one Mark. Good find! You are correct - the seats are leather. Lovely jubbly!!

ABS light could be the OVP relay. First thing I'd check.

That's lovely B) +1 on the OVP. They might have blown the fuse when they changed the battery. Mushroom leather for the win B)

Nice one Marko, you can't beat the W124 for style, I'm very tempted to buy a T model myself. B)

like like Mark, leather looks luxurious and comfy B) but no AC during the summer equals sweaty times. :driver:

I agree :)
The T's are such an iconic car
I would love 1 too ( 300D )

The merc leather seats are great in summer because of the perforations. My dad has leather in his Volvo and they are horrible due to the lack of perforations.

They are a little cold during the cold months but I just whack the heated seats up to full :D

Lovely car Mark  ,

Looks a real gem! Shame about the weather though!

Interior looks perfect. I would not worry about A/C. Just something else to go wrong in my opinion. I've had A/C in all three of my old Mercs. Probably needed it 7 or 8 times.

Sometimes, if these cars have jump leads attached it can blow the OVP fuse. That could cause the ABS light.

Look forward to seeing some more pictures once it's stopped raining :D

Hi Gaz!
Thank you for the kind words
Yes the car had been jumpstarted :ermm:
What type of fuse is it?.....same as those in the main fuse box? or is it a dealer only part?

It's a blade type fuse I and I seem to recall it's 10amp (red) but not 100% sure.

Cheap as chips to get hold of! ;)

No idea about that i'm afraid but would not have though so. More likely to be the actual meter, I would think? They are very easy to change if reqiured though, and cheap from a breaker.

I would think the OVP would be in the same place as mine (behind the battery). Unlike a 190 there is enough room to remove it, or it's fuse without removing the battery. Just pull the plastic cover up the sits behind the battery.

I've just been outside in the dark with a torch :ermm:
I can't see where it could be....( I've searched the forum it's that red thing near the battery on 190s but I can't find anything looking like it on mine )
I will have another look tomorrow in the daylight

Its behind the battery, probably behind a plastic screen, look under the windscreen, the OVP has a RED top.

Nice car and 199 B)

I just wondered if it was conected that's all ( I've searched for OVPs on the forum and somebody else mentioned similiar symptoms )

Thanks for the kind words Mark,

I really loved my 190's but I do prefer the W124. It just suits me better.

No problems re the advice. I'm sure in the daylight you will see the relay easily enough. There is quite a lot more space under the bonnet of a 124.

The relay might have a black top. The single fuse OVP's have the black top but the twin fuse OVP's have a red top. Both should have a clear cap that can be flipped up to access the fuse.

Had a look in daylight during my lunch break
OVP fuse was blown
ABS light no longer on all the time
Cold start up instant on the key
and lumpy idle is cured
that 10amp fuse does a lot
Thanks Guys for the help and advice :driver:

Fixed ! great news :)

I'm surprised more 190 owners haven't moved to the 124, I was tempted with a white sportline near me last month !

Looking forward to more pics :)

I'm keeping the 190D :o
I've not moved on to a W124 really.....There's just 1 parked outside my house....We might end up keeping the Avensis who knows
I still love my 190D but think the W124 is a great car too.... :driver:
The only parallel I can draw is W201=Cortina W124=Grananda ( Only much better Mercedes build quality )
But I guess it's Horses for Courses at the end of the day
Like Gaz2N said yesterday evening The W124 suits him much better :driver:

Completely agree!

They are totally different beasts. The 201 is much lighter and more agile. The 124 is more grown up and substantial.

I prefer much the looks of a 201. The body proportions are spot-on in my opinion. The 124 is dare I say 'ugly' from the front. :o

The interior of the 124 on the other hand is light years ahead of the 201 in terms of quality, style and comfort....

They are both superb cars. As Mark says, it's horses for courses!

Gaz!
I feel the same way
maybe a W201 with a scaled down W124 interior would be the perfect car B)

Lovely car Mark.

I myself moved from a 190e to 124 (mine's an estate, albeit the weedy E200) about 6 months ago. I find the ride quality of the 124 to be far superior to the 190e, although I do miss the way my 190e Sportline went round corners! I hope you enjoy yours as much as I'm enjoying mine

Cheers,

James

Yep, forgot the ride quality, which is definately miles better than the 201 (although the 201 is good compared to the vast majority of modern cars I've been in).
