Hi there i have a 1990 2litre 190e , recently the car wouldnt start. After looking on this forum and reading many posts about cold start valves OVPs ,bosch black boxes etc etc i thought id have a go myself. Result ! I fixed the problem and now it starts well from cold / warm and with stable tick over. I already knew the Fuel pump was ok...by listening at first key position etc.
Here are some pics to show where Cold Start Valve and OVP ,Bosch Black Box are located. .
BTW in no engineer , but i managed this all within 3 hours which is what i spent checking out loads of posts re starting up the engine.
Fistly i checked distributor cap and cleaned contacts with servisol plus a lite rub with fine abrasive .
Checked/cleaned leads to spark plugs seemed ok.....removed plugs and cleaned them... this took the longest....put em back in place.
Took off air box and checked /cleaned the air intake disc .took off the lower half of air box to get at the Cold Start Valve, removed and cleaned with servisol, i also used a pin to gently clean/ clear the hole at the base of the valve. Seemed ok. re seat valve and electric plug which i cleaned. Basically i cleaned everything which i could get at.......might as well whilst im there eh !
Took out the OVP relay -cleaned pins .checked fuse at top, was fine (under red cover -10 amp) re seated relay, its in a holder also, so make sure its put back so that it doesnt rattle around.
reseated the Kickdown cube relay....bit fiddly to get at .....i knew my kick down worked so just a wiggle and i was done.
reseated the top long connector of the Bosch Black box as i call it (theres a lever on the LHS )
Thats about it.
Turn the key to first position , listen out for the pump sound , then turn round to full position....and hopefully BINGO ! A working 190e. Good luck guys.

A very helpful 'post' Fila, and very well labeled.

I should imagine it will slow down the 'qwezzies' on where is this and where is that.

@ All Mods, it would be an idea to 'Pinn' this post. ;)

Nice post. Just one modification required if you get the chance. The black box labelled "kickdown" is actually the Fuel Pump Relay. Just avoids any confusion for future users. Other than that, well done!

The fuel pump relay for the auto transmision cars does have 'kickdown' written on it. :)

nice pics. Is there any precaution re working with the Bosch brain? I was trying to jump start mine and the kind lady phoned her husband mechanic. He warned that I could destroy the ecu that way.

The OVP relay should protect the ecu.

But have a spare fuse ready for the top of the OVP relay as that will probably blow. ;)

And thats why there is a 10 amp fuse on top of the OVP .
I have used the tin foil from some extra strong mints before, just to get me home.
Great thread.

When using jump leads you should always switch the headlights on to help protect the OVP from power spikes.

il remember that for future refrence
will that 100% protect ovp or still risky?

wow that is a good bit of information, unfortunately it didn't work for me and could do with some help please

My beloved 190e (my first incidentally and wish I'd done it sooner) started a year ago to act up.
She developed gearbox issues in that she only ran in third and was faster in reverse. There was no ATF fluid left (my fault) so a new re-con one was fitted, but i have since been told it could of been a vacuum leak along with no ATF fluid that stopped the gearbox operating properly!?! I don't know if that is the case, does vacuum pressure regulate the gearbox?? :ermm:
Anyway After getting car back from the Mercedes specialist fitter (with paint damage and a big bill later, who also struggled like billyo to set the car back up properly)

It would start fine from cold, I'd drive for a mile to local shopping centre get some cash out of the machine then try to start again to no avail.
I was told it was the OVP, which I had never heard of but I eventually found it (thanks to this site) and replaced it with a new red topped one cured it :D but the ABS light came back on after installation (could a new OVP be dodgy as the fuses are fine??)
The symptoms changed to cold start issues with lumpy start and the sound of running on two cylinders, So I checked coil, ht leads, sparks, dizzy, fifth injector, and all seemed ok and I stopped using cheap tat Tesco fuel on many recommendations from here.

I replaced the Hose under the air filter box as it was split (improvement in car),
The ignition timing thingy on the inner wing (improvement in car),
New battery which I didn't need to change but was on the list,
New replacement fuel cap (improvement in car),
Fuel filter (more improvement)
Checked and replaced any damaged small vacuum hoses (no change)
but the problem still exists

Yesterday was nice and warm so went to see if my baby would behave but the swine wouldn't play ball at all. :help:
The fuel pump would prime intermittently and she kept cutting out and stalling etc. So a replacement fuel relay has been ordered, but I am not sure if that will cure her

Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be? (not counting the novice driving and trying to maintain her lol)
I have taken it to all the local garages and they know the solution from my description, right up to the point I lift the bonnet and they see the engine and the KE-Jetronic system, Then they start scratching their heads (ooh carbs, not worked on a carb for 20 years mate sorry!)

It is very annoying, she is a lovely car but with issues which I want to resolve, and any help would be greatly appreciated

Alex

"edit"

I have also checked the air flow meter which was dirty but operating fine, and I have temporarily removed the air filter as it is running better without one for now and stopped parking it in front of a hedge as an old boy recommended it (saying older cars don't like mist/moisture and hedges bushes etc trap moisture so don't park near one. A garage is best but I am not afforded that luxury

Those vids that accompanied the OP are apparently no longer available. Does anyone know where similar can be found? As a complete novice, I could do with some visual guidance.
